Sylvester Stallone opens up about how playing polo with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan lead to him starring in Tulsa King on Paramount Plus

Sylvester Stallone has played a wide range of characters in his storied career, but he finally gets a chance to play a gangster in Paramount Plus’ Tulsa King.

The 75-year-old actor was announced as the star of the new series back in December, which will premiere on Paramount Plus Sunday, November 13.

The Rocky star revealed to ET that it was a chance encounter with Tulsa King and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan while playing polo years earlier that lead to his long-awaited gangster role.

The new series follows New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), who is released from prison after 25 years.

Much to his surprise, he is unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as he realizes the mob may not be looking out for him the way he had hoped.

Manfredi starts assembling a crew to create his own criminal empire in the most unlikely of places.

Series creator Taylor Sheridan has become a hot commodity at Paramount Plus, but years before his big break as a writer with 2015’s Sicario, he was a working actor, who met Stallone at a horse ranch.

‘My daughters and I were practicing — I play polo a lot; a long time ago people would say, how can you afford it? I played with the worst horse on the planet, but I learned and eventually after I made money, I started to go into… barrel racing,’ Stallone began.

‘It’s very, very delicate and I brought my daughters into it and Taylor Sheridan was at the same barn and he hadn’t made it yet’ Stallone said.

Stallone added he was, ‘still acting and I think he was still doing [2015’s] Sicario, just on the cusp, and I thought, “You know what, I’m going to do another Rambo, you want to write it?”‘

Much to Stallone’s surprise, Sheridan turned Stallone down, stating, ‘No, I’m kind of busy on my own thing,’ but that got them talking.

He added Sheridan, ‘ended up buying my daughter’s horse and then he bought a second one… but they are the earliest inception of his transition into being this megastar.’

After Sheridan’s 2015 breakthrough hit Sicario, he then won over fans and critics with hit movies Hell or High Water and Wind River, before creating his hit series Yellowstone in 2018.

Stallone also revealed, ‘I’ve always wanted to play a gangster since… I basically started off my career mugging everyone… but it never happened. I have my thoughts on why but better late than never.’

‘Taylor Sheridan wrote an idea, a screenplay that was really good and Terence Winter, who wrote Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, they put it all together and what you have is East meets West,’ he added at the Londoner Hotel for Paramount+’s U.K. launch event.

He added that his character, ‘comes out of prison after 25 years, expects to be rewarded for keeping his mouth shut and he’s betrayed.

When he’s sent to run Tulsa, ‘it’s a different world, different kind of people and he starts to become indoctrinated into the Western sort of life. So it’s a combination of the two. It’s a dark comedy but also it can get rough.’

Stallone also hinted at a possible cameo on Yellowstone, stating, ‘Absolutely,’ and he’s known Yellowstone star Kevin Costner, ‘for centuries.
