The Canadian, who has become one of the most affable figures in Hollywood, got his acting start in 1984 in TV. After starring in a few smaller show and movie roles, Reeves had his breakthrough with 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. In time, Reeves became a standout in the action genre, catching notoriety in Speed, The Matrix franchise, Constantine, and, of course, the John Wick films.

While Keanu Reeves has tackled every genre at this point, including notable titles within the world of rom-coms and pure comedies, action will always be his forte. Thankfully for Reeves, two of his most prominent roles connected to the genre have become massive franchises. To date, Reeves has played Neo in four movies in The Matrix franchise, with the latest installment in the sci-fi action series releasing in 2021. Reeves voiced the role of Duke Caboom, the Canadian daredevil toy meant to parody famous stunt performer Evel Knievel. Though he didn’t have a massive role in the Toy Story movie, Reeves’ character left a memorable impression as the failed stunt motorcyclist toy. He was also one of the intriguing big-name actors to join the notable voice cast list for the 2019 installment. The Pixar sequel made over $434 million domestically but ended up with over $1 billion at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo).

Sure, Keanu Reeves had some box office bombs, but following Toy Story 4’s massive success, his most successful movies have come from expected titles more commonly linked to the actor. Worldwide, The Matrix Reloaded holds the second spot ($739 million), The Matrix sits in third place ($463 million), and The Matrix Revolution comes in fifth place ($427 million). As for John Wick, Chapter 4 is currently in the fourth spot after it made $440 million worldwide. The only other John Wick movie in Reeves’ top ten is John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which is in seventh place with $327 million.

Though Toy Story 4 is the only solo movie by Keanu Reeves to make $1 billion at the box office, the John Wick franchise also hit that accolade, but it needed all four installments to do so. Following the release of John Wick: Chapter 4, the John Wick franchise passed the $1 billion mark globally in mid-May 2023. This is still an impressive feat for an R-rated action series that doesn’t have the advantage of broad demographic appeal compared to something like Toy Story. A decade after John Wick launched, the franchise is still relevant, spawning a prequel TV show and the Ballerina spinoff. There are also signs Keanu Reeves will return for John Wick 5. It might not hit the levels of Toy Story 4, but Keanu Reeves will always carry appeal.
