Ten years ago, Britney Spears was the toast of every awards ceremony as the newest, sassiest pop singer in the charts.

Her youthful, all-American looks and apparent innocence made her an international star and a role model for young women.

Since then her life has been far from straight-forward, but last night saw the singer awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Teen Choice awards.

The Gimme More singer wore a little black dress, greeting fans before posing for pictures at the California event.

The newly svelte star wore a daring, tiny black sparkling dress.

The awards are voted for by the teens and tweens of the U.S. and the  award is seen as stamp of approval for coming through her personal crises as much as for churning out a decade of highly-danceable pop.

Over the years the 27-year-old has been at many of the annual ceremonies but this time, she looked more comfortable to be back in the spotlight.

In the past year, the mother-of-two has been looking a little tubby around the tummy, prompting speculation that she is pregnant again.

But the singer appeared to be back to her best last night.

Nine years previously, the singer appeared in an odd combination, looking a bit Dolly Parton-ish in short-frilled pink number with high nude heels.

And pink is her colour of choice for the ceremony, wearing a pretty, girly number in 2003 and 2006.

It was at that ceremony the singer promised a hot career comeback.

‘The last couple of years have been quite a ride for me, the media has criticized my every move and printed a skewed perception of who I really am as a human being,’ she said.

Joining Britney last night were a host of A-list stars. Cameron Diaz wore a classic grey pencil dress, with open toe blue sandals as she picked up the award for Choice Summer Movie award for My Sister’s Keeper.

Teen star Miley Cyrus went for a rock chick look in a T-shirt and mini skirt, with layers of chunky jewellery.

On stage the Hannah Montana star performed a racy dance, cavorting around a pole in chunky boots.

Disney star Vanessa Hudgens, from High School Musical, attended with her co-star, and boyfriend, Zac Efron.

And the Jonas Brothers, Nick, Joe and Kevin, thrilled the crowd of teenage fans.

Also taking to the stage were the Black Eyed Peas, with singer Fergie performing in a black rubber catsuit.
