Roy Keane says Erik ten Hag is ‘on trial’ at Man Utd with his future in doubt after Ratcliffe’s arrival

ROY KEANE has claimed Erik ten Hag is on trial at Manchester United following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

United have struggled for much of the campaign and suffered their worst start to a season for 61 years.

They were dumped out of the Champions League group stages and have lost nine out of 23 Premier League games this season.

Qualifying for the Champions League remains a tall order for United this season, although Keane believes they can still finish fifth.

However the pundit has suggested Ten Hag will be under a lot of pressure should he fail to get back into the Champions League.

Keane told Sky Sports: “It’s a harsh word to use, ‘on trial’, because most managers are under pressure, but when you’re Manchester United manager, that pressure comes.

“Is he on trial? Yes, he probably is until the end of the season. If he doesn’t get his hands on the FA Cup or get into the Champions League, that pressure will be building.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought into United last month and held talks with Ten Hag along with Sir Dave Brailsford.

The Dutchman said he is “on the same page” as the new investors, with the trio said to have common ideas on many issues currently surrounding the club.

Reports claim Ten Hag is set to avoid the sack as Ratcliffe is planning a detailed structural review which will likely take up to two months.

First on his agenda is appointing a sporting director and possibly a technical director.

Those two individuals will likely have a significant influence over Ten Hag’s future, though United have appeared to have turned a corner in recent weeks with wins over Wolves, West Ham and Aston Villa.
