Beyoncé’s Renaissance concert film dominates box office with $22M, biggest December weekend since 2018.

Beyonce‘s highly-anticipated concert film Renaissance helped breathe new life into the box office with a solid $22 million opening weekend.

The tally was especially big for the first weekend of December, a typically stagnant weekend, with the $22 million coming just below the weekend record of $24.2 million set 20 years ago by Tom Cruise‘s The Last Samurai, via Deadline.

The concert paved the way for a $95 million weekend overall, the largest in the first December weekend frame since 2018

It was also revealed on Sunday that Marvel will stop reporting international grosses for The Marvels, meaning it will soon end its run as the lowest-grossing MCU movie of all time, currently at $80.7 million domestic and $197 million worldwide.

Renaissance – which has been a hit with critics with a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – chronicles Beyonce’s worldwide Renaissance tour.

Renaissance opened exclusively in AMC Theatres, the chain’s second concert film this year after Taylor Swift‘s The Eras Tour, which took in $178.8 million domestic and $249.5 million worldwide.

Renaissance – which Beyonce wrote and directed (with James B. Merryman and Mark Ritchie directing the live segments – opened in 2,539 theaters.

It earned an impressive $8,270 per-screen average, though the two-hour-49-minute concert film didn’t fare quite as well overseas.

The film only took in $6.4 million in foreign markets for a global debut tally of $27.4 million from an undisclosed budget.

Beyonce’s film ended the two-week reign of The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which dipped 50.1% with $14.5 million, with $121.2 million domestic overall.

Coming in third place was Godzilla Minus One, which debuted with just over $11 million from 2,308 theaters for a decent $4,779 per-screen average.

Trolls Band Together held fast in fourth place with $7.6 million ($74.8 million domestic) and Wish rounded out the top 5 with $7.4 million ($41.9 million domestic).

The top 10 was rounded out by Napoleon with $7.1 million ($45.7 million domestic), Animal with $6.1 million, The Shift with $4.3 million, Silent Night with $3 million and Thanksgiving with $2.6 million.

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels already dropped out of the top 10 with an 11th place showing of $2.5 million in its fourth weekend.

While it’s unclear when it will leave theaters, it will clearly be the lowest-grossing MCU movie and the only one to not cross $100 million worldwide.

The Captain Marvel sequel brought together Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel along with  Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel.

Next weekend brings action thriller Unit 262 and La Syndicaliste to theaters.
