Mbappe took a pay cut but received a huge “briefing” fee when joining Real

The French player currently earns 25 million euros/season (21.4 million pounds) at PSG. If he goes to Real Madrid, he will only earn 15 million euros (12.8 million pounds) per season. This means, Mbappe accepted a reduction of more than 8.5 million pounds to join the new team. However, the 25-year-old striker still became the club’s highest paid player.

Mbappe has agreed terms with the Spanish club although neither PSG nor Real have made any official statements while the two could still meet in the Champions League.

Despite losing his basic salary, Mappe will be paid a “tip-off” fee believed to be more than €100m (£85.6m) and will retain 80% of the image rights to any commercial deal. Mbappe’s decision to leave PSG was welcomed by the Spanish capital as the final piece in the puzzle for Ancelotti to lead a team that could dominate European football for the next decade. But a former French World Cup winning player, Emmanuel Petit, has raised doubts about Real’s wisdom in signing his compatriot.

Petit shared: “If Mbappe goes to Real it could be a problem. Not only in terms of salary, in the dressing room but also in terms of leadership. Bellingham is great, so is Vinicius and if he goes to Madrid, he He will have to play as a striker (center) and we all know this is not his best position.”

In the same week that news broke that Real had finalized a contract with Mbappe, La Liga announced the latest salary cap for all Spanish clubs. These figures are calculated based on each club’s expected income and expenditure, and govern their transactions in the transfer market.

Real Madrid have been assigned the highest salary at 727 million euros (£622.5 million), meaning they can sign Mbappe without having to sell any players. The news is much worse for Barcelona as the salary cap is set at just 204 million euros. This is around €200m (£171m) more than their current wage bill and means they will have to sell players this summer if they want to bring new players to the club.

The release of the numbers will only add to speculation that Barcelona are preparing to sell at least one of their highest-earning players at the end of the season. Ronald Araujo, Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong have all been mentioned as players likely to leave in the summer.

Although speaking ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League last-16 first leg with Napoli, De Jong said: “People say I earn €40m (£34m) per season. It’s a long story. I happy at Barca and I hope I can continue for many more years.”
