Emma Stone is blaming someone else—not her stylist—for the malfunction in her Oscars wardrobe.

The Oscars have given us more than a fair share of shocking moments. From the slap heard ’round the world to jaw-dropping performances, the Academy Awards never fail to deliver. And yes, let’s not forget those whoopsies that have us all talking weeks after the stars have brought home their golden statuettes. Remember Jennifer Lawrence’s trip up the stairs? Or the infamous mix-up announcing La La Land as Best Picture instead of Moonlight? This year, it was Emma Stone‘s turn to unintentionally steal the spotlight with an Oscars wardrobe malfunction that had everyone buzzing — and it’s not her stylist she’s pointing fingers at.

Emma Stone, who took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, graced the 2024 Oscars in a dress that could only be described as a mermaidcore masterpiece before the unexpected occurred. The actress chose a stunning ensemble by Louis Vuitton. The mint gown, a blend of classic charm and modern edginess, featured a peplum skirt and a form-fitting silhouette. But it was the zipper that became the center of attention as Stone accepted her Oscar.

“Oh, boy. My dress is broken. I think it happened during I’m Just Ken I’m pretty sure. Oh, boy, this is really — this is really overwhelming. Sorry, I’m — okay, my voice is also a little gone. Whatever,” Stone laughed as she accepted her second Academy Award for Best Actress.

So, who’s to blame for this busted zipper? Stone humorously pointed the finger at none other than herself — or maybe Ryan Gosling, for rocking too hard. It turns out, the fervor and energy with which she sang along to “I’m Just Ken” were too much for even the sturdiest of zippers.

“I made a big deal about busting the zipper, but it really was my fault,” Stone confessed to The Hollywood Reporter weeks after her Oscars win. “I would have busted the most industrial zipper on the planet during ‘I’m Just Ken.’”

And can you blame her? Gosling’s performance of the Barbie song was nothing short of electrifying, drawing everyone in the Dolby Theatre — and those watching from home — into a whirlwind of nostalgia and toe-tapping joy. Stone’s enthusiasm, mirroring our collective excitement, was simply too potent for any zipper to withstand. We’re guessing it happened just as she joined him to sing along to the Oscar-nominated tune.

So, here’s to Emma Stone, for reminding us that sometimes you just gotta go hard, even at the expense of fashion. And perhaps, just perhaps, it’s time to rethink the engineering behind those glamorous gowns so stars can get just as into the musical performances as the rest of us watching back at home in sweats.
