Emma Stone is hoping to soon step back into her fashionable Disney villain role.

The Oscar winner, 35, gave an update on the sequel to 2021’s Cruella, telling Variety that filming will begin on the second installment “hopefully sooner rather than later.” Stone said the character is “a blast” to play.

“We’ll see… it’s a work in progress,” she told the outlet of the sequel’s timeline while on the red carpet at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Awards, where she received the Desert Palm Achievement Award for an actress, for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things.

During her acceptance speech, Stone recalled a 𝑠e𝑥ist studio executive’s advice to her, as he called a woman’s career “a sprint, not a marathon,” hinting at the supposed time limit on women in the entertainment industry.

“I realize that advice is total garbage because the majority of the women that I look up to in this industry, many of whom are in this room, have proven that as time goes on, life and work only get more interesting and more fulfilling,” Stone said.

Cruella detailed the origin story of the character Cruella de Vil before she wreaked havoc in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. Before its second weekend in theaters, PEOPLE confirmed a sequel was in development.

“We are very pleased with Cruella‘s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said at the time.

“The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

Stone told PEOPLE at the time that the elaborate costumes helped her get into character and embrace the “over the top” nature of Cruella.

“With all of that put on, it felt like you could go there, safely, and really just inhabit something so far from… Well, it’s not that far from who I am, I guess,” she joked of her parallels to the character. “It’s eerily similar, actually. We’re a lot alike.”

During the filming of the movie, Stone told Entertainment Tonight that it was “pretty trippy” to be playing the iconic villain. “It’s wild,” she said. “Right now, I’m tired all the time, but there are times where I’m like … ‘This is bananas.’ ”
