One Piece: Will Kuma Survive Egghead Island?

Kuma’s death seems imminent in One Piece.

One Piece is currently in the Egghead Island arc and the story arc has proven itself to be an incredible beginning to the Final Saga. Much of the events of the Egghead Island arc are centered around the characters of Kuma and Bonney. Of course, fans have come to adore these two characters over the course of this arc and, naturally, as a result, they only want the best for these characters.

Sadly, when it comes to Kuma, he already has major death flags and might very well end up succumbing in this arc. Fans would love nothing more than for Kuma to survive his hardships and finally get the happiness that he truly deserves for once. However, it absolutely cannot be denied that his chances of survival are quite low.

Kuma’s Tragic Life In One Piece

Kuma lived a tragic life from the beginning to the end. He was born in the kingdom of Sorbet and, right from the very beginning, it was clear for everyone to see that Kuma would live a very tragic life. This is because he was born into the Buccaneer Family, which the World Government believed to be criminals for what they did long ago in the past. As soon as information about Kuma being a Buccaneer was made public, he was taken by the World Government as a slave, along with both his parents. Kuma’s mother ended up dying first in slavery and his father ended up being shot right in front of him shortly after. He spent a significant portion of his childhood in chains and lived a terrible life where he had to be grateful for not being killed by his masters.

Kuma managed to escape 30 years ago on the island of God Valley, where he ate the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and successfully saved around 500 people. This time around, he returned to the Sorbet Kingdom once again and decided to live his life there with Ginny. Ginny was Kuma’s very own beloved love interest, however, he did not want to marry her out of fears that she would, one day, be taken in because of ties to a Buccaneer.

Sadly, tragedy struck Ginny when she was kidnapped by the Celestial Dragons and forcibly made to marry one of them. Ginny ended up bearing a child out of this forced marriage and she also contracted the Sapphire Scale Disease, a dangerous illness that would take her life if she were to be under any source of natural light. Ginny sacrifices her life for the sake of her child, Bonney, which she finally delivered to the Sorbet Kingdom. In the process, she ended up dying while Bonney was then raised by Kuma.

Kuma raised Bonney as his very own daughter and when he found out that Bonney also had the Sapphire Scale Disease, he went from country to country searching for a cure for his daughter. This was quite a difficult task for Kuma to accomplish, and, all this time, he had to keep Bonney away from natural light. Kuma also knew that Bonney would die by the time she turned 10 and, for him, this was heartbreaking. He sacrificed everything that he had for Bonney’s sake and, eventually, thanks to help from Dr. Vegapunk, Kuma finally managed to kill her. However, this cure didn’t come easy. Kuma had to basically become a Shichibukai and, if that wasn’t enough, he had to give himself up for experimentation and have his entire memory erased so that he turned eternally a slave to the World Government.

Essentially, Kuma signed his own death and eternal slavery in order to save Bonney. For Kuma, saving Bonney was the utmost priority and he did so because he absolutely loved her, as well as her mother, Ginny. Bonney was eventually cured and shortly before the events of the Paramount War arc, Kuma had his memory completely erased, which meant that he was now a slave of the World Government for eternity.

Kuma’s Self-Destruct Command

After the timeskip, Kuma didn’t play a significant role in the story until the Final Saga. However, he’s been deeply involved in the Final Saga, shortly after he was saved from Marijoa by the Revolutionary Army Commanders. For some reason, Kuma started heading out towards Egghead Island even though he has no control over his body or even any memories.

This is quite strange and it is almost as if Kuma’s will still exists within his body. This means that his soul and his willpower are what is moving him currently towards Egghead, where he knows that Bonney might be in danger.

That said, Kuma has already sustained damage from his fight against Sakazuki and it doesn’t look like he will make it out of Egghead alive. This is even more difficult when taking into consideration the fact that Saturn has a self-destruct command for Kuma which he can use to destroy him at any point in time. The chances for Kuma to survive this ordeal are very low, however, if One Piece fans know anything, it is that miracles always happen to those who believe and for Kuma, although survival is very difficult, it should still be somewhat possible.

Can Kuma Survive Egghead Island?

Kuma’s chances of survival on Egghead Island certainly exist. This is simply down to the fact that when he gets to Egghead Island, he will be surrounded by characters such as Luffy, who fans know as Nika himself. Kuma is a slave and has lived his entire life in slavery and if there’s one thing that Nika can do, it is save those who are in need of help, and that applies to slaves like Kuma more than anyone else. Of course, Luffy has to save Bonney as that is one thing that Kuma hoped in his life for, however, Luffy simply cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of Kuma either.

For Luffy, saving all the slaves is important and that is the biggest source of hope that fans of Kuma should have at the moment. Of course, a big problem that persists here is that Kuma has sustained tremendous damage already. However, fans should keep in mind that Vegapunk is with the Straw Hat Pirates and any damage that Kuma sustains can be fixed by him, especially since Kuma himself is a cyborg.

The biggest problem, however, is the fact that Saturn has a self-destruct command for Kuma and he can indeed destroy him at any point in time. However, Kuma can, perhaps, be saved by self-destruction by Luffy or, his willpower might prevail and even if he’s severely damaged by the self-destruction, he might still stand. This could very well end up saving Kuma’s life and the rest would then be left to Luffy. Luffy will definitely not let Kuma die or sacrifice his life for him and, given that he is Nika, all hopes are pinned on his shoulders at the moment. It must be said, however, that Kuma’s chances of dying are much more than his chances of survival, however, one can absolutely not rule out the fact that he can very well live.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. Since One Piece is going to be on break, the release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1102, is set to be December 25, 2023.
