When LeBron James delivered a $1.3 million Christmas surprise to a former pro basketball player and his wife

LeBron really went out of his way for the spirit of Christmas.

In 2016, LeBron James gave John Whorton and his wife Angel an unforgettable Christmas when he personally delivered the couple’s $1.3 million winnings from a game show straight to their doorstep. The lucky couple won the said prize on NBC’s “The Wall,” a game show co-produced by LeBron himself.

“They have no idea that I’m showing up,” an enthusiastic James said in an Instagram video before opening two duffle bags with wads of cash.

Everybody had a Merry Christmas

As it turns out, John was a former pro basketball player in New Zealand. After his playing years, Whorton, like any other father, wanted to ensure that his children would be financially stable in the future. In a stroke of luck, he and Angel wound up playing and winning on “The Wall.”

“LeBron, I just want to thank you for this opportunity to represent not only our family, but our community,” Angel said via Cleveland.com. “This means an opportunity for our kids that we could never imagine. They will have their own investment, and we will be able to give that back to them. I thank you.”

On the other hand, LBJ was equally, or maybe even more, glad to have helped John and his wife take a step further in reaching their dreams.

“This is why we created the show,” James said. “For normal people to be able to have an opportunity to change their lives and not only for the grown-ups, but this is for the kids.”

LeBron is committed to helping

Some may not know, but besides co-producing a game show, James has also been paying it forward in his community through his foundation. Bron believes that his purpose is not only to become the greatest basketball player of all time but, more importantly, to make his community better.

It was noted that the James Educational Foundation alone is spending about $1 million annually on various initiatives. To name a few, the foundation has been actively helping kids get interested in going to school, and young adults go to college.

“I would love that at some point in time throughout their lives, and they can come to our foundation and say, you might not remember me, but I was that kid that came from this school, and now I am a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic. That would be incredible for me to hear,” LBJ once opened up.

Judging by how James has committed himself to helping his community, it’s safe to say that his legacy will not begin and end in basketball.
