Scarlett Johansson was left feeling “hopeless” when she lost the role in Gravity.

“I had wanted that role so much.”

Scarlett Johansson has said she felt “hopeless” after losing out on a role in Gravity.

The actress has spent much of the last decade playing Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in the Avengers film series and leading a standalone Black Widow movie.

But if things had panned out differently for Johansson, she would have added Gravity to her filmography as well.

In a new interview with Variety, the actress revealed she missed out on the lead role in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 sci-fi film, with the part ultimately going to Sandra Bullock.

“I had wanted that role so much. It was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. Like, ‘Am I doing the right job?'” Johansson said.

“The work I was being offered felt deeply unfulfilling. I think I was offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever. I was like: ‘Is this the end of the road creatively?'”

The actress, who will next appear in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, has also denied the prospect of returning to the MCU.

“I am sad, of course,” Johansson said. “I absolutely loved every filming experience I had, working 10 years with Marvel and with that amazing cast, and I love the character Natasha.”

She added: “I have a lot of empathy for her, and it was amazing to build that character over such a long period of time. I also feel really good about her story coming to a close. I think she has a lot of dignity in her legacy.”

It was recently announced that Johansson will reunite with Marvel star Chris Hemsworth for the animated prequel movie Transformers One, which will focus on a young Optimus Prime. The cast for the film also features Brian Tyree Henry, Jon Hamm, Laurence Fishburne and Keegan-Michael Key.
