Michael Chandler calls for super-fight with the Irish MMA star Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor has teased a potential return to the UFC and has already been met with a response by one of his fiercest rivals.

McGregor, who recently starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in a trailer for the Road House movie, has not stepped foot inside the octagon since July 2021.

The Irishman lost against American star Dustin Poirier, via doctor’s stoppage, after breaking his leg during the first round of the bout.

He has since recovered from the injury and has, recently, been teasing a potential return to the UFC in the early months of 2024.

UFC chief Dana White had downplayed those claims but McGregor recently took to social media to issue his interest in fighting at UFC 300.

Conor McGregor teased a potential return to the UFC on the highly-anticipated UFC 300 card

McGregor and Michael Chandler (R) have been tipped to face-off inside the octagon

The two UFC stars traded verbal blows on social media, as they teased a potential match-up

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, McGregor said: ‘McGregor on 300 seals the deal.’

UFC 300 is expected to be one of the organisation’s best cards in years, with the likes of Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira all featuring.

The card still needs a main event fight, with many suggesting that McGregor should make his return to the UFC and headline the card.

Shortly after McGregor’s post, rival Michael Chandler took to X to say: ‘I accept. See you soon #UFC300’.

Chandler and McGregor had been expected to face off inside the octagon after appearing as coaches for the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter show.

Typically, at the end of the season, the two coaches from either side will fight in the UFC however that appears to be far from reality, at the moment.

McGregor himself delivered an announcement on New Year’s Eve, swirling a glass of red wine as he declared that he’d be back for International Fight Week in June 2024.

McGregor is seemingly eager to make his first appearance in the UFC in three years

McGregor’s last fight was when he suffered a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021

He said: ‘The greatest comeback of all time will take place in Las Vegas, International Fight Week of June 29. The opponent, Michael Chandler — and the weight, Mr. Chandler, 185 pounds.’

But if that announcement had swelled the balloon of excitement, UFC president Dana White, recently, popped it.

When asked about McGregor’s comeback in June, the 54-year-old said: ‘Uuuuh, no. When Conor is ready to fight, you know we’ll announce it. That’s what we’ll do.’
