One Piece: Luffy’s Upcoming Major Defeat, Explained

Luffy will face his biggest defeat in One Piece.

One Piece continues its incredible journey in the Egghead Island arc and fans are extremely excited for the climax of this amazing arc to finally kickstart. This incredible arc has been going on for quite long now and it has tackled some of the most amazing developments over the course of the last year.

Of course, one major thing that every fan of One Piece has been incredibly injured by in this arc is the display of the Emperor of the Sea, Straw Hat Luffy, in the arc. Luffy has gone from strength to strength ever since he returned from the two-year timeskip, and more importantly, now, as a Yonko, his skills are finally being tested. Luffy has won every significant battle that he has fought since then, however, a major setback might be on the way for him and the straw had pirates.

Luffy’s Ordeals In The Final Saga

Luffy began the Final Saga immediately after he defeated Kaido in combat and stole his position as an Emperor of the Sea. Having taken this position, Luffy is now considered an elite pirate all over the world and feared by everyone, such that even the Navy wouldn’t take action against him without authorization. This made complete sense, given that Luffy was the man who defeated Kaido and, on top of all that, possesses a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that has the power of an ancient God. There is absolutely no denying the fact that Luffy is one of the most dangerous people in the world, especially to the World Government.

As a result, it is their responsibility to stop him and make it so that he doesn’t succeed in his journey to the One Piece. This has already been seen in One Piece in the ongoing Egghead Island arc. The World Government has tried to lay a massive siege on Egghead, which consists of 100 ships, including 20 large battleships.

The biggest challenges that Luffy faces on Egghead Island are Saturn and Kizaru, both of which are incredibly powerful, as expected. These individuals are quite dangerous, however, judging by Luffy’s showing against Kizaru, he isn’t someone to be incredibly worried about. Saturn, on the other hand, could be a different tale altogether. Fans do not know exactly how strong Saturn is, however, based on the aura that he exudes, he might be on the same level as Luffy himself. As such, Luffy’s ordeal in the Final Saga just at the very beginning is going to be overcoming these two monsters and then, things are only going to get more difficult. Luffy might very well end up losing at some point in the Final Saga.

The Hints For Luffy To Lose

While it is difficult to imagine Luffy losing any battle in the Final Saga, there are certainly hints for that to happen. Of course, Luffy has awakened the power of a God and that only means that he is incredibly difficult to take down in combat. However, that does not mean that Luffy is invincible or that he cannot be tricked and defeated by deception. At some point, Luffy will encounter a dangerous situation where he will end up facing defeat and there are already hints for this in the story. The biggest hint for this in One Piece is the existence of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. While one might wonder as to how that correlates to Luffy losing a major battle, one simply needs to look at the method by which the Grand Fleet is connected to Luffy.

It must be remembered that Sabo made a Vivre Card for Luffy and this paper has been distributed among the members of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Sabo himself holds a piece of paper from Luffy’s vivre card. For those who do not remember, vivre cards are essentially an indicator of the life force of a person. They point towards an individual’s location, and at the same time, if they start to burn, then it is an indication of the fact that the user’s life force is burning. Oda used Ace’s vivre card as a plot device in One Piece before the timeskip and it signified him dying to Luffy and led him to his brother both in Impel Down and later on, in Marineford.

The fact that the Straw Hat Grand Fleet has Luffy’s vivre card means that it is going to be used at some point. If every member of the Grand Fleet is going to use it at the same time, then it implies that the situation is going to be very tense. This means Luffy’s life force itself might be burning and, as a result, the grand fleet would need to follow the vivre card in order to rescue their captain.

The Straw Hat Grand Fleet And Sabo Called Into Action

The fact that Sabo and all the captains of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet have Luffy’s vivre card means that they will, at some point, have to come into play and help Luffy when his back is against the wall. When and how this will happen is something that fans do not know. According to Oda, all the members of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet are currently making a name for themselves and getting stronger. They are not going to be incredibly active in the story at the moment, however, when a major incident of massive proportion takes place, the Straw Hat Grand Fleet will be involved in it in some way or form, and at the same time, they will then burst on the scene.

This in itself suggests that something could happen to Luffy in a massive incident. Recently, Oda mentioned the Egghead Incident in the same breath and this might be an indication towards Luffy losing his first battle on Egghead as a Yonko. If that were to happen, then all the captains of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet would rush to his rescue, along with his brother, Sabo as well. This would then make sure that the vivre card, which is a massive plot device, comes into play.

Of course, it is not a guarantee that the major incident that Oda was referring to was the Egghead Incident. Luffy could potentially face a difficult situation later down the line in the final war as well and potentially, that will be the time when the Straw Hat Grand Fleet comes into play. For now, fans do not have clarity on that, however, what can be said for certain is that Luffy’s vivre card is going to come into play when he’s in danger, and the Straw Hat Grand Fleet will come to his aid at some point in the future. Whether Luffy will lose on Egghead or not is something that remains to be seen, however, if he does, there’s certainly been a setup for it from the get-go.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1106, is set to be February 4, 2024.
