New York In May 1979

Once he photographed New York City’s disintegrating West Side Elevated Highway in May 1979, German-born tourist PetersHagen took a troll around other parts of the city.

Like Peter Marshall, he took photos of the everyday, the stuff you walked past all the time but never thought to photograph. Some scenes appear mundane.

We see flyers pasted to walls, those big-engined cars, the non-chain stores and other things no longer so prevalent. We’ve been NYC in the 1970s before – for St Patrick’s Day in 1974, to marvel at the neon lights in ’71, to hear the streets of ‘fear city‘ rattle with like a monkey’s cage and for so much more.
