Two giants in the combat sports industry, Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou, will face off on October 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, this is not Fury’s WBC heavyweight title defense.
Fury became British national champion in 2008. The Gypsy King defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 to become WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring heavyweight champion. However, Fury had to relinquish his championship belts after getting into drug and alcohol problems and was eventually suspended.
Fury returned in 2018, where he fought then-WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and it ended in a draw. In 2020, Fury and Wilder fought again, this time The Gypsy King defeated his opponent by TKO (Technical Knock out) to win the WBC and The Ring belts. Fury then went on to defeat Wilder in his 2021 title defense to retain the belt. Since then, Fury has had two more title defenses against Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora, the last match in December.
(GETTY/ZUFFA LLC/Sporting News)As for Fury’s opponent, Ngannou started his boxing training early but entered the MMA world by becoming a professional fighter in 2013. The Cameroonian joined the UFC in 2015, defeating the likes of Curtis Blaydes , Andrei Arlovski and Alistair Overeem. After losing his UFC heavyweight title bout in 2018, Ngannou knocked out Stipe Miocic in a rematch at UFC 260 to win the title.
Ngannou successfully defended his heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 in January 2022. That was Ngannou’s last fight in the UFC. His contract with the UFC ended in December 2022 and could not negotiate a new contract, thereby losing the heavyweight championship. He finally signed a contract with the Professional Fighters League.
Both fighters were successful and dominated their own arena. Both Fury and Ngannou have also successfully built their brands and are always the focus before every match.
