Scottie Scheffler just became the first golfer to ever repeat as a Players Championship winner and thanked his wife, Meredith, for her support back at home.

Scheffler won, narrowly avoiding a playoff when Wyndham Clark’s birdie putt on the 18th hole somehow lipped out.

When asked about how he approaches the game mentally, Scheffler says he doesn’t feel his ego gets inflated and that his family helps to keep him grounded.

‘This environment here where everything’s being recorded, I think it can be a tough place to be 100% honest all the time,’ Scheffler said. ‘You got to be cautious and don’t want to say the wrong thing this day and age.

‘But at the end of the day, I think it all goes back to the support system at home. I really do have a great support system. I’m very thankful for it.

It’s his second consecutive win at this tournament – the first player to accomplish that feat

‘I have a great wife and if I started taking my trophies and putting them all over the house and walking in all big time, I think she’d smack me on the side of the head and tell me to get over myself pretty quickly.

‘So winning golf tournaments definitely doesn’t give me any brownie points at home, so just trying to do my best.’

Scheffler’s career is at something of a peak at the moment – having won two consecutive events on this PGA Tour calendar.

Just last week at Bay Hill, Scheffler beat Clark again (this time by five strokes) to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Next up on the PGA Tour’s so-called ‘Florida Swing’ is the Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course – with The Masters rapidly approaching.

Scheffler could become only the second player ever to win the Players and the Masters in the same year if he finds success at Augusta – joining Tiger Woods in rarified air.
