10 years since Iran’s nuclear deal reshaped its economy and foreign policy

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Iran finds itself on the brink of a crisis as the 10th anniversary of the landmark nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (GCPA), passes amid renewed conflict. Following a series of devastating U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s primary nuclear facilities, the already fragile diplomatic landscape has shattered, leaving a trail of destruction and rising casualties. Over a thousand lives have been lost in the recent 12-day conflict, with hundreds of civilians among the dead.

Once hailed as a path to peace and economic revival, the GCPA now stands in jeopardy. The deal, which initially brought Iran’s economy to unprecedented growth in 2016, has been undermined since the U.S. withdrawal in 2018. President Donald Trump’s reinstatement of sweeping sanctions plunged Iran into economic turmoil, igniting protests and social unrest across the nation. As Iran ramped up uranium enrichment to 60%, hopes for a diplomatic resolution dimmed.

Recent talks between the U.S. and Iran had sparked cautious optimism, with both sides preparing for a pivotal sixth round of negotiations. However, just days before these discussions, Israel launched a surprise attack on Iranian territory, further complicating an already tense situation. In response, the U.S. struck back, targeting key nuclear sites in Iran, escalating fears of a broader conflict.

With the United Kingdom, France, and Germany now considering the reimposition of UN sanctions, the future of the GCPA hangs in the balance. Iran has suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and vowed to continue its nuclear activities, defying international pressure. As the world watches closely, the question remains: can diplomacy be revived, or is this the beginning of a more dangerous chapter in Iran’s nuclear saga? Time is running out, and the stakes have never been higher.
