According to L’Équipe, some of Kylian Mbappé’s (24) Paris Saint-Germain teammates believe that the France captain plays “for himself first and foremost.”
Mbappé netted a hat trick against Stade de Reims on Saturday night to take his Ligue 1 tally this season to 13 goals. He is now six goals clear of his nearest challenger, Montpellier HSC’s Akor Adams. The Frenchman is now close to beating his own record for goals during a calendar year. Last year he scored 32; Mbappé is currently on 29.
However, whilst Mbappé is shining individually, there have been some poor collective performances by PSG, who nonetheless sit top of Ligue 1 heading into the upcoming international break. One of those poor performances came against AC Milan in midweek. After the Champions League defeat, questions about Mbappé’s positioning and decision-making were asked internally by his PSG teammates, according to L’Équipe, with some players believing that the France captain plays “first and foremost for himself.”
PSG manager Luis Enrique is also under the impression that Mbappé can do better. “I’m not really happy with Kylian today. I have nothing to say about the goals but he can help the team more in different ways,” said the Spaniard, despite Mbappé’s hat-trick against Reims. There is therefore an impression behind-the-scenes that Mbappé could certainly contribute more to the collective effort.
