Seven years after first making her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen is opening up about her Marvel deal.

Like most actors who sign on with Marvel Studios, she signed a multi-picture deal that locked her in for several movies, with the 33-year-old actress revealing to The New York Times that she felt ‘frustrated’ with the contract, at one point.

While she wasn’t happy about losing certain roles due to her Marvel contract, she did reveal that she had a different kind of ‘freedom’ within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Olsen is the younger sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who starred on Full House as toddlers, who burst onto the scene in the 2011 indie film Martha Marcy May Marlene.

She would go on to star in indie films (Red Lights) and major studio fare (Godzilla) alike, before her turn as Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

She returned in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the 2021 Disney Plus series WandaVision and the new MCU movie Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which debuted in theaters last weekend.

Still, despite her success, she admitted that she, ‘started to feel frustrated’ about her Marvel contract.

‘I had this job security but I was losing these pieces that I felt were more part of my being. And the further I got away from that, the less I became considered for it,’ she said.

‘It took me away from the physical ability to do certain jobs that I thought were more aligned with the things I enjoyed as an audience member, and this is me being the most honest,’ Olsen continued.

She added, though that she had a different kind of, ‘freedom, ‘ adding ‘The power to choose to continue was important to me,’ referring to WandaVision.

‘We thought what we were doing was so weird and didn’t know if we had an audience for it, so there was a freedom to it,’ she continued.

‘There was no pressure, no fear. It was a really healthy experience,’ she added of the series, which she starred in alongside Paul Bettany as Vision.

As of now, it’s unclear if she will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though she revealed she would consider it, if the story is right.

‘It really needs to be a good story. I think these films are best when it’s not about creating content, but about having a very strong point of view — not because you need to have a three-picture plan,’ she said.

Olsen will next be seen in the HBO Max mini-series Love and Death, starring alongside Patrick Fugit and Jesse Plemons.
