Thanks to Barbie, the world was covered in pink this 2023 — but it looks like there is a new hue in town: red, more specifically in dress form. The little red dress is ringing in the festive season, getting the cosign from Olivia Rodrigo, Ariana Grande, and Sydney Sweeney.
LRDs are all the rage this season, and it makes total sense why. What better way to beat the gloomy winter blues than to introduce a little bold and festive red to our wardrobes? Olivia Rodrigo understood the assignment. On December 8, she rocked a little red vintage Versace dress at iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball in Madison Square Garden. The little red ‘fit is from Gianni Versace’s 1996 couture collection and features a sheer-embellished top and metal-detailed straps. Fitting Olivia’s usual edgy aesthetic, she paired the LRD with black knee-high socks and black boots.
Notably, the GUTS singer has the mini dress look down pat, and she always injects a pop of color when she can. Lest we forget her sheer Versace LBD after her GUTS release and a mini purple Versace dress for the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2022, to name a few.
Ariana Grande also got the little red dress memo this season. On December 9, in a cameo performance of “Oh Santa!” alongside Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson, the pop star wore an off-the-shoulder “Lady in Red” Mirror Palais mini dress with matching elbow-length gloves.
KEVIN MAZURThe r.e.m. beauty founder’s performance was part of Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas One And All tour in New York’s Madison Square Garden and marked her return to the stage since primarily focused on filming the upcoming Wicked films all year.
Sydney Sweeney followed suit on December 12. The star has been serving look after look during the Anyone But You press run, and, of course, a LRD made the rotation. Sweeney’s take on the trend was custom-made by Balmain and featured a bustier-style top with chic shoulder coverings as well as a rose detail on the skirt, which accentuated a small slit. Of course, the star went the extra mile and perfectly matched the hue of her dress to her lipstick, bag, and shoes.
If three of the most trendsetting celebs opting for little red dresses this season hasn’t sold you, the catwalks for Fall 2023 have also spoken. The most coveted color among the runways for the season was red. From Valentino’s little corporate chic red to Ganni’s ruched red sequin dress and Theory’s long-sleeved red mini dress, there is truly a little red dress for every occasion.
