Blackpink Lisa tops Weibo searches despite China controversy

Blackpink Lisa’s appearance at King Charles’ state banquet was the most-read topic on Chinese social media platform Weibo after the event, despite allegations authorities had shut down her Weibo account.

At the state banquet held on Nov. 21 to welcome the South Korean President and First Lady, the four members of the K-pop legendary girl group all appeared in elegant designer dresses as esteemed guests.

Lisa’s looks attracted attention from Chinese social media users. The keyword “Lisa’s state banquet style” made it to the most-read topic on Weibo’s Entertainment category, garnering 110 million views after only a few hours, an impressive achievement given that her official Weibo account was shut down and various luxury fashion houses’ account removed posts featuring her earlier this month.

The moves prompted allegations the Blackpink star was punished by authorities for her striptease performance at the Paris-based Crazy Horse cabaret, as Chinese law holds that entertainment industry workers are banned from organizing, attending, or promoting 𝑠e𝑥ually related activities. Stripping is classified as such in China.

For her appearance at the banquet, Lisa chose a dress from a Lebanese designer’s collection “Goddess of Love,” which consists of a dress and a cape. Crystals were attached to her fit as its highlight, creating a formal and classy vibe, and the singer completed her look with metallic heels and a diamond necklace by Bulgari. Chinese netizens commented that she “shone among princesses” with her elegant and gorgeous aura.

Born Pranpriya Manoban in Thailand, the pop star later changed her first name to Lalisa.

The 26-year-old made her debut with the South Korean girl group Blackpink in 2016. She launched a simultaneous solo career in 2021 with the release of her album “Lalisa.”

“Money,” one of the four tracks presented in her solo album, surpassed 1 billion streams on music streaming platform Spotify, making her the first female K-pop artist to release a song with as many streams.

The star has also established her name in the fashion industry as a global ambassador for various luxury brands, including Celine and Bulgari.
