Jurgen Klopp’s players are the comeback champions this season but should Liverpool be better at the start of games?

They have only gone and done it again. For the ninth time this season, Liverpool have come from behind to earn crucial points in the Premier League title race.

Their draw with Arsenal, a game they could have won were it not for Trent Alexander-Arnold hitting the crossbar in the second half, means Jurgen Klopp’s side have picked up 19 points from losing positions. Nineteen. Last season, they only picked up 15.

Despite falling behind in 10 of their 18 league games this season, they have lost just once. The resilience of potential champions or a sign of sloppy starters?

A win would have put either side top at Christmas. In the past 16 Premier League seasons, only six Christmas Day leaders have failed to go on to lift the trophy.

On each of those occasions, the team to fall away was either Arsenal (2007-08, ’22-23) or Liverpool (’08-09, ’13-14, ’18-19, ’20-21).

Arsenal and Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday night with Gabriel scoring to put the away side 1-0 up after just four minutes

Liverpool have now come back against nine teams this season gaining 19 points

Jurgen Klopp’s side went a goal down early on as Gabriel headed in to put the away side 1-0 up after four minutes

Don’t forget to keep your eye on Man City, too. They have no problem making a late charge. The past six times they have won the league, only twice have they been top at Christmas — in ’17-18 and ’21-22.

A long way to go.

Liverpool’s excellent record against Arsenal

Liverpool’s 19 points gained from losing positions this season is six more than any other team in the Premier League.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 11 home PL games against Arsenal, in a run stretching back over a decade to Sept 2012.

In six of those games, they’ve come from behind.

Last season they were 2-0 down and drew 2-2, this time around they responded to Gabriel’s early header — and could have won it!

The result means Arsenal will retain their one-point lead at the top of the Premier League table

Arsenal have been top of the table at Christmas and have failed to win the league six times
