Margot Robbie, star of “The Suicide Squad,” discusses her future as Harley Quinn and the possibility of passing the mantle to other actresses.

Rumours continue to swirl about Margot Robbie’s possible future in the DCU as Harley Quinn, and the actress herself has now addressed that after being asked about Lady Gaga’s role in the Joker sequel.

Margot Robbie first played Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, later reprising the role in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – renamed Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey following a disappointing opening weekend – and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

All those movies took place in the DCEU, of course, and with DC Studios set to relaunch that franchise as the DCU, it’s unclear whether there’s a place for Robbie.

Gunn has hinted that he might bring her back and hasn’t shied away from enlisting the DCEU actors he enjoyed working with for his reboot (The Suicide Squad‘s Viola Davies and John Cena are among them). The question is, does Robbie want to return?

Variety recently spoke with the Barbie star and wondered if she’s planning to say goodbye to the role now that Lady Gaga is playing the character in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux.

“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters,” Robbie tells the trade. “That was always the dream for her.”

“Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

Tellingly, there’s no mention of the DCU or whether Robbie is gearing up to bid farewell to the fan-favourite anti-hero.

It’s clear she wouldn’t be against the idea, though, and if the actress really is keen to share the character…well, will she want to return as Harley nearly a decade after first playing her?

“I know it’s crazy,” Robbie said in 2022 of the plans to start over with the DC brand. “And Peter Safran, so he was also the producer on The Suicide Squad, so I know them both really well and they’re a dynamic duo. I think that’s such a get for DC.”

Robbie would go on to confirm she’d like to see Harley explore her comic book romance with Poison Ivy.

Their relationship has been tackled in HBO Max’s Harley Quinn animated series, and it’s a dynamic fans remain keen to see play out in live-action as well.

“I have been pushing for that for years. I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too,” the actress said. “Honestly, when I pictured, I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics. I don’t really actually picture an actress doing it, but I agree, that would be so good.”

Do you think we’ll see more of Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the DCU?
