The creator of Naruto envisioned these three characters to be adored, yet faced a wave of criticism and disapproval from fans.

With Naruto’s huge cast of characters, it’s impossible for fans to sympathize with some of the ninjas in the series.

Naruto is a work filled with fascinating and complex characters, so it’s interesting to know that author Masashi Kishimoto himself has some characters that he wishes were more loved by the public.

But surprisingly, these characters ended up being some of the most criticized names in the series. These special cases are Kimimaro, Sai, and Sakura.

Kimimaro: Possesses a scary skill

Kimimaro is built with a touching backstory and has unique skills. However, one of the possibilities, using Kimimaro’s own bones as a weapon, seems to have worried many fans.

Author Kishimoto believes that the character’s bone manipulation technique may be “too strong” for female audiences. Perhaps this character is too dark to be popular, which is a shame considering the complexity of his background.

Wrong: Misunderstood

Sai is a character who joined Team 7 to replace Sasuke after he defected from Konoha. Although Kishimoto did not give his own explanation for the audience’s dislike of Sai, perhaps there was no need for the audience to state it, it was quite obvious.

Sai has a somewhat cold and mechanical personality, a personality that is difficult to love in a series full of strong emotions and brotherly love. Sai’s somewhat effeminate appearance with pale skin may also contribute to the audience not liking him. The thing is, Sai is a much deeper character than he’s given credit for.

Sakura: The eternal debate

Sakura is perhaps the most confusing case. From the beginning, she was presented as a female protagonist, but unfortunately, she lagged behind the strong development of the remaining 2 members of team 7, Naruto and Sasuke .

Kishimoto thought that by showing “inner Sakura,” the author would create a portrait of a relatable young woman that would attract female fans. But what actually happened was massively counterproductive. Sakura’s initial inability to contribute significantly to battles, combined with her obsession with Sasuke, made her an “obstacle” in the eyes of fans.
