Londoner’s Diary: Gal Gadot: You may say I’m a dreamer… I meant well

IT WAS the video that stunned the world — but not in the way its creators intended. Now Hollywood star Gal Gadot has admitted her Imagine cover, which featured a raft of famous faces, was “not the right thing” and “in poor taste”.

Cara Delevingne danced alongside model Kaia Gerber and actor Ashley Benson as part of the rendition of the John Lennon song. It was released on Instagram in March last year as much of the world went into sudden lockdown. But despite going viral it came to be seen as an example of vapid celebrity culture while people dealt with the effects of the pandemic.

Actors Natalie Portman, Will Ferrell and Mark Ruffalo were among those who starred in it.

At the time she posted the video, Gadot said she had been “feeling a bit philosophical”. The Wonder Woman star now explains her motivation: “The pandemic was in Europe and Israel before it came here [to the US] in the same way. I was seeing where everything was headed. But [the video] was premature… All pure intentions, but sometimes you don’t hit the bull’s-eye, right?” A swing and a miss.

GEORGE BRANDIS, the Australian High Commissioner to the UK, has been left red-faced after it emerged he caused a car crash at COP26 in November while trying to catch up to his prime minister’s vehicle. “George was late and was telling his driver to hurry up and catch up with the motorcade,” a source told Australian media. “One of the police cars then braked, causing the other to crash into it. No one was injured but it was highly embarrassing for the Commissioner.” A diplomatic investigation is underway.

BRIDGERTON’S Charithra Chandran is not looking back. At the start of the pandemic, having just graduated from Oxford and with a high-flying consultancy job waiting for her in London, Chandran, who plays Edwina Sharma, took a different path. “I cold-called people, emailed different agencies, sent off my sh***y showreels and CV.” It worked. “I compare it to having a partner,” she tells The Face. “Once you find one that you love, you realise that you didn’t really love any of your exes. They pale in comparison.” Pointed.

In 2017 Theresa May “found herself in the position which politicians sometimes find themselves in, where she felt unable to explain why she’d called the election”, her former chief-of-staff Gavin Barwell has argued, while talking to the Mile End Institute podcast. Is that really very common?

LABOUR MP Charlotte Nichols last night showed off a selfie from a boxing class she had attended to get into “the fighting mood” ahead of the return of the Commons today. Fellow MP Stella Creasy replied: “Can you choose the face on the punchbag? Asking for a friend…” Let the brawling begin.
