Carlo Ancelotti has offered Real Madrid veteran star a place on his coaching staff

Journalist Martin Cortegana has reported via The Athletic that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has offered club legend Luka Modric a chance to join his coaching staff if the Croatian decides to call time on his career at the end of the season.

Interestingly enough, the reporter mentions that the veteran midfielder initially rejected Ancelotti’s offer to join his coaching team, although the denial did not seem like a “definitive no” leading to the suggestion that he might reconsider his stance over the same.

Modric’s contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of the season and while a lot has been said about the midfielder, Ancelotti has earlier confirmed that only he will make an affirmative decision regarding his future.

“As I have already said [on other occasions], Luka is a legend of football, of Real Madrid. The decisions for next season have to be taken by him.”

Ancelotti’s offer came in two months ago

Ancelotti extended an offer to Modric and this approach was made approximately two months ago. Although initially rejected, it is not expected to be a definite refusal.

This offer to Modric is said to be independent of the decisions regarding assistant coaches Davide Ancelotti and Francesco Mauri. Note that both have reaffirmed their commitment to the current coaching setup by rejecting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia in January.

Sources, speaking anonymously to preserve relationships, have indicated that Modric remains open to considering the coaching role. However, right now it is expected that the 38-year-old midfielder is still eager to continue playing and is prioritizing his desire to compete.

No decision made yet

Right now, Modric’s renewal with Real Madrid seems unlikely based on the season’s trends and no conclusive decision has been reached at this point.

Furthermore, it is to be noted that Modric signed a one-year extension with Real Madrid last summer, turning down interest from Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr to continue his stay in Spain.

This time around, though, the team from the Spanish capital is not expected to extend any offer and Modric reportedly feels betrayed by it.
