The Dragon Ball Super Gallery is a monthly project where iconic mangaka recreates covers of the Dragon Ball manga to celebrate the franchise’s forty years since it started.

Started by Masashi Kishimoto, creator of the Naruto series, Yoshifumi Tozuka was next in line after Yusuke Murata set a high bar in last month’s challenge where he made his unique take on volume 30.

Undead Unluck’s creator brought his unique flair to Toriyama’s magnum opus

Yoshifumi Tozuka redrew the cover art of volume 21 of Dragon Ball, which featured Gohan and Krillin flying in the air with Bulla behind them on a flying scooter. His was particularly interesting as he drew the image from a different angle, making Krillin and Gohan the main focus. Alongside the illustration was a message to Akira Toriyama and the audience, in which he revealed how much he loved the Frieza arc and how it inspired his work. He isn’t the first mangaka to take from the legendary series, as many of today’s authors grew up reading Dragon Ball and some were even inspired to take up the pen due to his influence.

The 40th anniversary of one of the biggest franchises in the world has been celebrated by the industry in various ways. Legendary mangaka such as Sui Ishida, Hirohiko Araki, Tatsuki Fujimoto, and many others came together to thank and honor a living legend for 4 decades in business.

“I love the feeling of the Battle Royale during the tension of the Freeza arc. There’s a sense in Dragon Ball that “Each character does what they can to the best of their ability”, which I think has influenced my own manga.”

Tozuka has been making a name for himself with his hit manga Undead Unluck which has an airing anime. A talented artist, he is slowly proving he is someone to be reckoned with in the manga business. From a unique power system to interesting characters, Undead Unluck is a must-read for anyone who is a fan of Toriyama’s Dragon Ball given how heavily it has been inspired by it.
