Introducing the New British Pro Boxer: Sparring with Crawford and Joining Forces with Anthony Joshua.

Introducing the New British Pro Boxer: Sparring with Crawford and Joining Forces with Anthony Joshua.

Christopher Luteke is a man in a hurry. At 27, Britain’s latest new super middleweight boxing star is ready and willing to jump straight into the deep end as he prepares to make his professional debut.

Luteke, who was born in The Democratic Republic of the Congo, is expected to be given his first outing in the paid ranks in March or April in London after signing a promotional deal with Frank Warren. The Sheffield fighter might never have fought on a pro card before but he does have vast ring experience, having had a decorated amateur career and shared the squared circle with superstars like Terence Crawford, Joshua Buatsi and Lyndon Arthur.

He had 69 fights as an amateur and only lost nine times so it comes as no surprise that he wants to rip up the rulebook and go for titles straight away. Normally, prospects are carefully guided at the start of their pro careers but Luteke has insisted he wants to be fast-tracked.

“I am planning for a six-rounder in my first fight and my opening goal is to get down to super middleweight. Once I get there, whoever has got a title like the Southern Area, is a target for me. I’ve said to Martin [Bowers] that I want to get fast-tracked and he said that if I believe in my ability we can put that in place,” he told Queensberry Promotions.

Boxing agent Sal Jobe pictued left with Jermaine Franklin and right with Ryan Garcia.

“I am really excited and I want to showcase my ability on a big stage. I am going to box at super middleweight and I believe the division is wide open. Signing with Frank Warren is a huge opportunity for me and I feel like I am the guy to take over at super middleweight.”

Luteke, a product of the Steel City Gym, is planning to primarily campaign at super-middleweight but can also fight at light-heavyweight. As an amateur, he became the National champion on five occasions, won eight Regional titles and was a GB silver medallist.

The England international is also a double NABC champion and represented DR Congo in the World Championships in 2021. Well-respected boxing agent, Sal Jobe, who works alongside Martin Bowers as part of his team, is tipping Luteke to emulate his success as an amateur in the pro ranks.

“Christopher is a huge prospect and we’re all excited for what the future holds for him,” Jobe said. “He’s got great amateur pedigree, has got a great team around him and has all the right attributes to succeed in this game. Working with Frank [Warren] he’s also got the opportunity now to go and display his skills on a huge platform.

“He knows that and he’s really hungry to get going and show what he can do in the ring.” Jobe has been around boxing for years and has worked with big-name stars – such as Daniel Dubois and Michael Hunter – and been involved in huge fights, having helped Jermaine Franklin secure the biggest payday of his career against Anthony Joshua last year.

Luteke is just starting out on his journey but Jobe is confident he will experience some great nights in his career. “He’s got a lot of potential and I’m sure everyone will get to see him fulfil that over the next few years. He wants to win titles and be in big fights. There’s some big names out there for him, especially on the domestic scene, and I’m sure he’ll deliver some entertaining nights for the British public.”

The 27-year-old has previously trained with Mark Tibbs but is set to join Anthony Joshua in Ben Davison’s stable following the heavyweight’s dust-up with Francis Ngannou. AJ is not the only big name trained by Davison with featherweight champion Leigh Wood and former undisputed super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor also studying under his tutelage.

But Luteke is used to being around world-beaters – and there is no chance of him being overawed when he enters Davison’s gym ahead of his first pro fight. “I have been training with Terence Crawford. Last year I went to Omaha for two weeks and they liked me so much they took me to Vegas for a month. I’ve sparred so many people over there and Bomac (Brian McIntyre) wanted to train me.

“He still wants to but, at the moment, financially it doesn’t make sense until I have a big title fight coming up and I will probably go back over. They have taken a big liking to me. I’ve also sparred with Buatsi, Lyndon Arthur and Liam Williams. In the amateur days I sparred Ben Whittaker as well so I’ve had good experiences and been in there with some of the best most definitely.”
