One Piece Proves Luffy’s Gear 5 Is Not Goofy, It’s Terrifying

Luffy’s new epic moment in the latest chapter of One Piece finally proves Gear Five isn’t just goofy and cartoonish but can be genuinely terrifying.

As the stakes continue to rise on Egghead, Luffy has finally gotten serious about taking down Kizaru and Saturn, a decisive moment in One Piece that proves Gear Five isn’t goofy but terrifying. Gear Five’s goofiness caused quite a divide among fans when it first debuted, causing many to be apprehensive about the future of One Piece‘s fights. However, the latest chapter puts these concerns to rest as Luffy finally gets down to business, and intimidatingly so.

In chapter #1108 of One Piece, Luffy finally takes charge of the battle against Saint Saturn and Admiral Kizaru as he grows in size to grab hold of both, and declares he has no intention of letting either of them get away. Although in his Gear Five form, Luffy appears surprisingly angry as he grabs Saturn by his head and crushes Kizaru in his fist.

Although Luffy has spent much of the battle of Egghead in Gear Five, this chapter marks the first instance of him deviating from the usual silliness of Gear Five. The chapter also dispels any concerns that Gear Five’s silliness may be taking over Luffy’s personality once and for all.

One Piece Proves Gear Five Isn’t All Fun and Games

At its core, Gear Five is a state in which Luffy is most “free,” as he himself describes it in chapter #1061 when asked about his new appearance. While this has translated to Luffy having more fun during his fights, it doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t capable of taking his opponents or fights seriously. Admittedly, Luffy has always been carefree, but he has always gotten serious when push comes to shove.

In fact, Luffy’s reaction in chapter #1108 is one that fans have seen time and time again whenever his friends get hurt, and while it may be surprising to see in Gear Five, it certainly isn’t completely out of character for him. Gear Five’s vast potential and reality-bending powers meant it always had the potential to be truly terrifying, and the latest chapter is only a glimpse of how intimidating Luffy can be when he gets serious, especially with his newly awakened devil fruit powers.

Luffy Is Simply Being Himself

Though others may recognize Luffy as the reincarnation of Nika or the Warrior of Liberation, Luffy himself is blissfully unaware of the truth about his devil fruit or the significance of Gear Five. This is made especially clear in chapter #1107 when Bonney claims Luffy is Nika, to which Luffy simply asks, “What’s Nika?”, proving his obliviousness.

Clearly, Luffy is still very much in control, disproving the common misconception that the Nika Fruit’s silliness is taking over his personality. Luffy is simply being himself, and he has been all along, helping those who asked for it (in this case, Vegapunk and Bonney), and having a little fun along the way.

That said, Luffy has finally kicked the battle on Egghead into high gear, and fans will likely see Gear Five’s terrifying abilities in full swing once again in the upcoming chapters of One Piece. Kizaru and Saturn will not be easy opponents, so perhaps Luffy may have to take the battle seriously to the end.
