The newly announced Kinds of Kindness will reunite Emma Stone with acclaimed screenwriter and filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. This will mark the third collaboration between Lanthimos and Stone, who just won her second Best Actress Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards which took place on March 10, 2024. Just days after Poor Things took home a total of 4 Oscars, including Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the next film by Lanthimos was officially confirmed. Kinds of Kindness will be released in theaters on June 21, 2024 and distributed by Searchlight Pictures.

Stone, who won her first Best Actress Oscar for her role as Mia in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land (2016), was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress in her first Lanthimos film, The Favourite. Lanthimos has received 5 individual Oscar nominations, including Best Original Screenplay for The Lobster (2015), and Best Director and Best Picture for both The Favourite and Poor ThingsStone and Lanthimos have proven to be one of the most impressive creative duos in Hollywood, which is why the swift announcement of Kinds of Kindness releasing with a June 2024 release date is just as exciting as it is surprising.

Poor Things’ 10 Most Shocking Scenes, RankedEmma Stone Is Reuniting With Yorgos Lanthimos After Huge Oscars Success

The rapid turnaround between Stone’s Oscar win for Poor Things and the release of Kinds of Kindness is hardly more than 3 months, which has certainly been influenced by the critical success of Lanthimos’ eighth feature. While Poor Things was filmed between October and December of 2021, Kinds of Kindness completed production between October and December of 2022. The latest film from Lanthimos is being described as an anthology film, with the same core group of actors telling more than one story all told together in one singular project. Details on the plot of Kinds of Kindness remain under wraps.

Stone continues to work with some of the greatest “independent” working directors today such as Lanthimos, whose innovative styles and critical acclaim have quickly transferred into the mainstream. Stone is also set to star in another highly anticipated Western project from horror auteur Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) titled Eddington alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler. Stone notably starred in and was nominated for a Golden Globe for the 2023 Showtime series The Curse created by Nathan Fielder (Nathan For You) and Benny Safdie (Good TimeUncut Gems). Kinds of Kindness could continue Stone’s impressive Oscar streak.

8 Reasons Why Poor Things Is A Feminist Masterpiece

The bizarre and delightful extended metaphor that is Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film Poor Things touches on many key cornerstones of feminist theory.Emma Stone & Yorgos Lanthimos’ Two Previous Movies Have Great Rotten Tomatoes Scores

Both Poor Things (2023) and The Favourite (2018) are two of Lanthimos’ most critically acclaimed films, earning Rotten Tomatoes scores of 92% and 93%, respectively. They are also the most profitable films of Lanthimos’ career by a longshot, with both films earning roughly $34 million each at the box office. Among the most critically acclaimed films in Lanthimos’ filmography is the director’s breakout hit Dogtooth released back in 2009, which was nominated in the previously-titled Best Foreign Language Film of the Year category (Best International Feature) at the 2011 Oscars. Dogtooth received a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Among the most highly regarded Lanthimos films, The Lobster starring Colin Farrel, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Colman, is up there with his most renowned works, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87% and a Metascore of 82%. The combined track records of Stone and Lanthimos have created a critical match made in heaven, with both artists having a decorated and and elite body of work before collaborating in recent years. With this current momentum, Stone and Lanthimos could become one of the most iconic actor and director duos in film history, ranking among the likes of Robert De Niro/Martin Scorsese and Philip Seymour Hoffman/Paul Thomas Anderson.

Poor Things is one of the most shocking movies of recent years, filled with outrageous 𝑠e𝑥 scenes and bursts of brutal, misogynistic violence. What We Know About Kinds Of Kindness, Emma Stone’s Next Movie

Little is known about the highly anticipated project from Lanthimos other than it will be an anthology film that will tell several stories with the same actors, presumably playing different characters or showcasing different period of their lives. Some popular examples of anthology films include the 2012 epic Cloud Atlas starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, as well as the 2006 French film Pairs, je t’aime, which featured several different directors such as Alfonso Cuarón and Joel & Ethan Coen. Lanthimos described the film as “a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story” (via The Guardian).

Kinds of Kindness is co-written by Lanthimos and longtime collaborator Efthimis Filippou, who worked with the director on multiple projects including DogtoothThe Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Barry Keoghan. Filippou and Lanthimos have not worked together on a feature film since 2017, making Kinds of Kindness a monumental moment, especially following the massive success of Poor Things and Stone’s Oscar win. Expectations will certainly be high for Kinds of Kindness, but Lanthimos seems prepared for the pedestal with his collaborative A-team in both writing and acting capacities.

What’s Up With Emma Stone’s Apple Scene In Poor Things?

Emma Stone’s apple scene in Poor Things is one of many explicit and bold moments in the film but establishes Bella as a bold, defiant protagonist.Kinds Of Kindness Has One Major Difference To Emma Stone’s Other Yorgos Lanthimos Movies

The June 2024 release date of Kinds of Kindness is interesting, considering both Poor Things and The Favourite were released during the thick of the awards seasonrollout in their respective years. Most Oscar contenders are released between October and December, which makes the release date of Kinds of Kindness somewhat peculiar. Of course, Stone and Lanthimos will be riding on the coattails of Poor Things’ 11 Oscar nominations and 4 wins, but its massive hype and acclaim still would have carried over to the Fall and Winter seasons of 2024.

2024 is already predicted to have a less lucrative year at the box office than 2023, which felt like a juggernaut between all the franchise releases as well as the exceptional standalone films like Barbie and Oppenheimer. As a summer release, Kinds of Kindness could be marketed more heavily than any previous Lanthimos movie, as the director has certainly established himself more than ever in the fabric of mainstream Hollywood despite his films that lean into absurd, fantastical, and unsettling themes. The anticipated Jeff Nicols project The Bikeriders is set to release on the same day as Kinds of Kindness, which could set up a minor rivalry between the two 2024 releases.
