Cruella (2021) features the story of Estella, played by Emma Stone, and her journey of becoming Cruella De Vil. A character that plays a huge part in this story, for better or worse, is Baroness von Hellman, played by Emma Thompson.
The two characters are both fashion designers and fierce rivals and are on the bitter end throughout the movie. This, of course, was not the case with Stone and Thompson. However, in an interview with Collider, the senior Emma recently joked about how the feelings between the two characters were aligned a bit with reality.

She said how “There is nothing more fun than pretending. I found pretending to be mean came horribly easily”. Emma Thompson further said how she believed that Emma Stone is more beautiful, young, and talented than her.
“When she finally sees someone who’s not only talented, but actually more talented than her, and younger and more beautiful, she finds it very difficult indeed. And of course, I found it very difficult being with Stone, who’s more beautiful, young, talented, etc. [than me]. I swallowed my bitterness and dealt with it, mostly through drinking Negronis, one after the other, late into the night,” Thompson to Collider.
Nonetheless, it is safe to say that the two actors share mutual respect and admiration for each other. The level of hatred they showed each other in the movie is a testament to how great actors they are.

“You must know, you can tell, how much fun she is,” “She’s so much fun! I mean, she would just come into the trailer like, we’re having tequila. I love her to death.” – Emma Stone speaking of Emma Thompson
“We had to control ourselves, put it that way,” “We had to prevent ourselves from having too much fun, because then the job would simply not have got done and we’d have had to have our makeup done lying on the floor, with ice bags on our heads.” – Emma Thompson to EW
The actors’ fun and excitement translated into the movie’s quality. The origin story of Cruella De Vil was certainly not on anyone’s bucket list, but it was a pleasant watch for many fans. The movie can be streamed on Disney Plus.
