Drake says Lil Wayne mistakenly thought his name was ‘Drizzy Drake Rogers’ when they worked together in 2008

Drake said that his musical mentor Lil Wayne mistakenly called him by the moniker ‘Drizzy Drake Rogers’ when they worked together in 2008 on the track Ransom.

The Toronto native, 36, spoke about the gaffe with Lil Yachty on the first episode of Yachty’s A Moody Conversation series for his FUTUREMOOD channel.

The entertainer, whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, said that Lil Wayne, 40, called him Rogers based off of the email address he had at the time, [email protected].

The God’s Plan performer – who recently lost $400,000 betting on Jake Paul in a boxing match – explained, ‘Rogers is the service provider in Canada. Wayne thought that – he didn’t realize at that time that the @ in the email was like a middle, interference. So he just thought my name was Drizzy Drake Rogers.’

Drake, who previously shared the story about the gaffe in 2010 speaking with Katie Couric, said that he was not keen to correct Lil Wayne.

He added that Lil Wayne ‘rapped it once’ and that he ‘didn’t have the heart to correct him … God bless his heart.’

The track Ransom, which was produced by Boi-1da, was put out during a time Drake was making mixtapes prior to his massive breakout.

On the track, Lil Wayne rapped the lyrics, ‘And I just sold a lot of property to a buyer/ And I think his name was kinda like Drake Drizzy Rogers/ Or Drizzy Drake Rogers, I’m too busy to play father/ And when it comes to the game, I’m too willing to play harder.’

Lil Wayne in 2009 would ink Drake to his label Young Money Entertainment, helping catapult him to rap superstardom.

The musical artists have engaged in multiple collaborations, including the 2010 track Miss Me, the 2011 song The Motto and 2021’s Seeing Green (which also featured Nicki Minaj).

Drake paid homage to Lil Wayne in a speech played at the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective during Grammys weekend earlier this month.

Hailing his mentor, who was being presented with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Drake spoke about the impact Lil Wayne has made on his career.

‘I don’t wanna make this personal because the Global Impact Award would be about how you affected everybody, not just me,’ he said, Complex reported.

Drake continued: ‘I know I probably get annoying with saying how much you mean to me and my family, but I think I speak on behalf of everybody when I say that our careers, our cadences, our melodies, maybe our face tats or our outfits or our decisions in general would not have been the same without your natural gift to be yourself.’

Drake, in a 2010 chat with People, said that Lil Wayne was among the most influential artists to him – in addition to Kanye West, Andre 3000, Jay-Z and Nas – hailing his ingenuity and perseverance.

‘It’s hard as a rapper not to become repetitive and he always has a new way to make it fun,’ Drake said at the time. ‘And I get to witness his work ethic. He’s working when you’re sleeping.’
