One Piece: The Strongest Logia Type Fruit Of Them All

The Yami Yami no Mi, is not only arguably the strongest Logia Fruit, but it also belongs to one of the series’ most evil characters.

One Piece is filled to the brim with powerful Devil Fruits that have incredible powers. The diversity of these fruits is amazing, because while some fruits can give very powerful offensive powers, others can give defensive abilities, or can turn the user into an animal. The possibilities are truly endless! Of all these Devil Fruits, Logia Types are generally considered to be the most powerful, and even among them, the Yami Yami no Mi stands out.

The Yami Yami no Mi is a special type of Logia Devil Fruit, not only in terms of the powers it gives its user but also because of the properties it grants that set it aside from other Devil Fruits of its kind. The person who has eaten this fruit is none other than Blackbeard, one of One Piece’s most infamous and powerful characters, so let’s see how this fruit has given him the power to become an Emperor of the Sea!

What Is The Yami Yami no Mi?

First Appearance: One Piece, Episode 325, “The Most Evil Ability! Blackbeard’s Darkness Attacks Ace!”

Category: Logia Type

Powers: Darkness Manipulation

The Yami Yami no Mi, or Dark-Dark Fruit, was eaten by Blackbeard at an unspecified time in the story. Starting as a mate on Whitebeard’s ship, Marshall D. Teach always wanted to get his hands on a very specific Devil Fruit to access its powers, which he correctly assumed to have the best chance of doing as a part of Whitebeard’s crew, which he was a part of for many years.

He spent all this time researching and reading up on every known Devil Fruit on the planet so he could claim the one he wanted upon finding it. However, it was 4th Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, Thatch, who made this discovery. Upon learning the Yami Yami no Mi was in Thatch’s possession, Blackbeard killed him and took the fruit, which he claimed to be fair game due to the laws of the pirates claiming it to be so. This act branded him a traitor to the Whitebeard Pirates, leading to his excommunication and Ace being sent to kill him.

Fate has chosen me to conquer this world!

The Yami Yami no Mi is a Logia Type Devil Fruit that gives Blackbeard control over darkness itself, which is standard for all Logia Types as they give their users control over natural elements. However, this fruit is unique even among them due to its special properties and the elemental powers that come with it.

Why Is This Fruit So Strong?

Though it is a Logia that gives its user the power over a certain element, there are quite a few things that differentiate it from the others. For one, the darkness that Blackbeard can control essentially acts as gravity. Blackbeard can produce near-infinite darkness out of his body, which has the attractive properties of gravity that can suck anything into itself, sort of like a black hole.

No person or object is exempt from the gravitational powers of the Devil Fruit. In his fight against Ace on Banaro Island, Blackbeard swallowed up an entire town within his darkness that seeped into almost every corner of the island. Once swallowed up, Blackbeard used his ‘Liberation’ attack to expel the entire town out of his darkness in one fell swoop, showing all the buildings and structures that had been absorbed had been destroyed. This absorption ability also works for other Devil Fruits, as Blackbeard gets the powers of the Gura Gura no Mi.

A hand of darkness to call forth the void. A hand of light to shke the Heavens and bend the Earth!

Special Properties of the fruit:

Moreover, perhaps the most terrifying ability of the Yami Yami no Mi is the power to absorb the abilities of any other Devil Fruit! This ability is activated whenever Blackbeard physically touches his opponent, which completely nullifies their Devil Fruit powers for the duration of the touch. Even when they’re far away, Blackbeard can use gravity to pull them toward him.

This is a real head-scratcher… but I guess I gotta kill ya.

This power is absolute, working similarly to the effects of water or sea stones. Though it works on all Devil Fruit users and essentially turns them back into regular humans, Logia users have it the worst, as this ability takes away their elemental transformations and intangibility, leaving them open for all other kinds of physical attacks. Though the oppressive forces of gravity already make it an extremely powerful Devil Fruit, the ability-negating properties of the Yami Yami no Mi make it the most terrifying, and perhaps the most powerful, Devil Fruit of them all!

Weaknesses of the fruit:

However, despite the ever-present and clear advantages of the fruit, there are some drawbacks that prevent it from being the unequivocal best Devil Fruit in One Piece. Although it is a Logia Type, its ability to absorb attacks prevents Blackbeard from becoming intangible like every other Logia Type, so unless he absorbs the attack in time, it can still hurt him. In his battle against Ace, he admitted that the absorption abilities make standard attacks hurt even more than usual.

Since it doesn’t give Blackbeard an elemental state of darkness for him to transform into or regenerate from like other Logia Types do, he is essentially less durable than a regular human in battle. This is why he has to completely be locked into a fight where he can absorb damage at the right time, Other than that, the standard weaknesses of Devil Fruits also apply to the Yami Yami no Mi.
