Jennifer Lopez slammed for ‘taking home £4million’ for Dubai concert amid anti-gay laws

Jennifer Lopez has come under fire as she took to the stage in Dubai on Saturday and appeared as the guest of honour at the launch of the One&Only One Za’abeel hotel

Jennifer Lopez has faced a wave of criticism after performing at a hotel launch in Dubai on Saturday night, despite the United Arab Emirates’ strict laws against homo𝑠e𝑥uality.

The 54-year-old, who has long been an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, is believed to have been paid $5million (£3.9million) to appear as the guest of honour at the launch of the One&Only One Za’abeel hotel. The luxury hotel is located in the United Arab Emirates, where LGBTQ+ people face several legal challenges.

Homo𝑠e𝑥uality is illegal under Sharia law in the United Arab Emirates. In Dubai, under Article 177 of the Penal Code of Dubai, those taking part in consensual sodomy (anal 𝑠e𝑥) can face up to 10 years behind bars.

According to The Sun, J-Lo took home the massive fee after earlier saying she would not be performing at the party. Gay rights activist Peter Tatchell told the publication: “It’s very sad that a long-time LGBTQ ally like Jennifer Lopez is prepared to put money before human rights.” The Mirror has approached Jennifer’s representatives for comment.

He suggested the United Arab Emirates tried to use Jennifer to “project a more liberal image”. Peter added: “It’s a cynical exercise and it’s shameful that she is going along with it.”

The Jenny from the Block hitmaker took to her Instagram Story to share a clip of her performance. She sang alongside Mark Ronson for an audience that included celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens and Idris Elba.

For the performance, Jennifer wore a sparkling purple jumpsuit and accessorised with plenty of silver jewellery. She styled her hair in a high ponytail and went for a minimal makeup look.

J-Lo has a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community. In 2019, she invited gay teenager Nat Werth to one of her shows after he was prohibited from delivering a valedictorian speech at his graduation after administrators learned he intended to address his 𝑠e𝑥uality.

The singer was also honoured with the Vanguard Award by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in 2014. In the same year, she also expressed her support for the legalisation of gay marriage. “Congratulations England and Wales. Gay marriage is legal today,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
