Jake Gyllenhaal serenaded the audience by singing a Boyz II Men song while taking on hosting duties during the 49th season finale of Saturday Night Live.
The Brokeback Mountain star, 43 – who previously showed off his unique singing skills to Sabrina Carpenter in a promo for the episode – was also joined by the Sue Me songstress, 25, during the special night.
The actor had the chance to once again flaunt his vocal talent during his opening monologue to kick off the night.
At the beginning, Gyllenhaal stepped out onto the stage and was greeted by excited cheers and applause from the live audience.
The star gushed to the crowd that it was ‘great to be hosting the finale of season 49,’ and then joked, ‘I mean, when you think of historic television seasons, the first number that pops into your head is 49.’

He further hinted that he wanted to be a part of the show’s 50th anniversary and humorously added, ‘I mean, sure, you know, one more episode and I would have been hosting the premiere of the 50th season.’
‘But who cares?’ Gyllenhaal asked the audience. ‘You know. 40 is a great number. I mean, seven times seven. Classic. Oh, and 49 is like 69 but easier.’
The actor then referenced to his latest film, Road House, which also starred Irish-born boxer, Conor McGregor.
‘Also, 49 is the number of times Conor McGregor accidentally punched me during Road House,’ he said.
‘People ask me what it’s like to work with Conor, and I always say “Oh, so great” because I’m scared he’s nearby.’
Jake then expressed that he was ‘honored’ to be taking on hosting duties and stated that, ‘They really bring out the big guns to host the last episode before the big anniversary season.’
‘And I know we’re all waiting for season 50. But you know, you can’t get to 50 without a little bit of 49. And we’re here at the finale. The end of the road,’ he dramatically stated while picking up a microphone.
Gyllenhaal then started to belt out the tune from Boyz II Men’s hit 1991 track, End Of The Road, to celebrate the end of the 49th season.

He also joked about how other celebrities had been asked to host the finale before he was chosen as host, such as Ryan Gosling, Zendaya and Pedro Pascal.
Other SNL cast members joined in on the tune, such as Kenan Thompson, Ego Nwodim, Punkie Johnson and Devon Walker.
The Day After Tomorrow actor also continued to sing about wanting the season finale of the 49th season to be just as important as season 50.
‘I’d like to think it’s also the start of a new one/In many ways this is the real episode, first episode of season 50,’ he sang, but Ego jumped in to say, ‘Nope. No, it’s not.’
The monologue concluded as Gyllenhaal and some of the other SNL comedians showcased their vocal skills.
‘Let me hear you!’ they serenaded the live audience. ‘It’s the last episode/ Time to say good-bye/ Time to say good-bye season 49/ We’ll always love you!’
Gyllenhaal also had the chance to show off his comedic skills while appearing in various skis throughout the night.

The star took on the role of Fred in a Scooby-Doo themed sketch that was a snippet from an episode called Scooby-Doo And The Mystery Of The Shadow Phantom.
Sabrina Carpenter made a surprise cameo in the skit as Daphne, Sarah Sherman as Velma, Mikey Day as Shaggy and the beloved dog Scooby was CGI.
The group could be seen walking through an abandoned, haunted mansion with Jake saying, ‘Keep your eyes peeled, gang. The shadow phantom has to be hiding somewhere.’
The others expressed their fear of being inside the house, with Shaggy saying, ‘Zoinks. Guys, like I think there’s someone behind me.’
However, Carpenter – who was dressed as Daphne – stepped forward and calmly said, ‘You’re such a scaredy-cat, Shaggy. It’s just me.’
The gang soon came across the shadow phantom floating inside one of the rooms. Scooby became frightened and while scurrying away, the pup knocked over a suit of armor onto the phantom – who got trapped.
Just like in the classic TV show, the group revealed who the phantom really was by removing the mask – and discovered it was ‘Old man Franklin.’
After figuring out how the man was able to act like a phantom, Jake asked, ‘But wait a second. Who is old man Franklin? I mean really. No one is who they appear to be.’

‘I thought it was another mask!’ Fred screamed, with Shaggy asking, ‘Why!’
Daphne offered, ‘We need to put the face in a bowl of dry rice,’ but Velma pointed out that the man’s face was ‘not a cell phone.’
Fred dropped the face skin onto the floor, and Scooby began to eat it. Fred took it away and tossed it towards Shaggy who announced, ‘I’m going to be sick.’
He leaned to the side onto a bookcase that moved, causing his arm to get stuck. When he pulled away, his arm was ripped out of its socket, causing a bloody mess.
Velma ran to get help but jogged into a wire, which cut her head off, adding to the gruesome events.
A police officer – played by Kenan Thompson – stepped into the room and asked, ‘All right. What have you kooky kids gotten yourselves into?’ but then paused while gazing at the scene before him.
Fred then shot the officer, and Daphne yelled out, ‘You just shot a cop!’ But he replied with, ‘We just shot a cop. We can’t have any witnesses.’

In another sketch, Jake took on the role of a father who was enjoying dinner with his wife as well as his daughter and her boyfriend. The four were seated at a table in the kitchen, waiting for the meal to finish cooking
However, when Heidi got up from her chair, she told Jake, ‘You stay out of those cookies on the counter. He always tries to sneak one before dinner’
Fred then asked Daphne, ‘Now, are you in, or are you out?’ as dramatic music played in the background.
However, suddenly Fred was shot, and when he fell onto the ground, it was revealed that Scooby had shot him. Scooby then said ‘Ruh-oh, b***h.’
The skit concluded to reveal that it had actually been an ad for Apple Face ID with the slogan: ‘Never get ripped off again.’
In another sketch, Jake took on the role of a father who was enjoying dinner with his wife as well as his daughter and her boyfriend. The four were seated at a table in the kitchen, waiting for the meal to finish cooking.
Andrew Dismukes played the boyfriend named Chris, while Heidi Gardner portrayed the mom and Chloe Troast took on the role of the daughter.
All seemed to be going well, and both Chloe and Heidi left the room for a moment to grab some items from the attic.
However, when Heidi got up from her chair, she told Jake, ‘You stay out of those cookies on the counter. He always tries to sneak one before dinner.’
Once Gardner and Troast left, Jake stood up and headed towards the counter while Dismukes pulled out a ring box from his pocket.
‘Sir, I know we just met, but there’s something I need to ask you,’ he began, but when he looked up, Gyllenhaal was standing by the cookie tray
The two were interrupted when Heidi discovered that a cookie had been eaten, and asked her husband if he was the culprit. But Andrew took the blame and said he ate it
‘Sir, I know we just met, but there’s something I need to ask you,’ he began, but when he looked up, Gyllenhaal was standing by the cookie tray.
‘Don’t tell the missus,’ he whispered while grabbing hold of a cookie. Andrew replied, ‘Hey, my lips are sealed.’
Jake said, ‘Our little secret, okay?’ and Dismukes replied, ‘Yeah, secret’s safe with me.’ But Gyllenhaal didn’t trust him and stated, ‘I’m serious. Don’t say anything.’
Andrew confirmed he wouldn’t, and Jake added, ‘And you heard her, right? You heard her say don’t have a cookie. But I’m having one.’
‘Cool. So you’re just going to roll with me on this cookie thing, right? Don’t b***h out on me,’ he said seriously, with Andrew saying, ‘Yes, I’ll roll with you on the cookie.’
Jake eventually ate the cookie and Andrew finally had the chance to ask permission to propose to his daughter, which he happily gave.
‘You have my blessing. Because I can tell you love her, and I can tell she loves you. And most importantly, you got my back on the cookie thing, right?’ Gyllenhaal asked, and Andrew confirmed he did.
The mom and daughter returned to the kitchen, and Dismukes announced he had something to say. However, Jake pulled him aside and asked if he was about to tell the truth about the cookie.
She said yes and the camera cut to Jake with a bunch of cookies in his mouth as he exclaimed, ‘This is the happiest day of my life. I finally have a son!’
Gyllenhaal starred in another skit as an officer for the NYPD and was at a press conference to discuss Boardwalk Empire Steve Buscemi – who was recently punched in the face in NYC during a random attack
Moranis is known for his roles in projects such as Ghostbusters while Stuhlbarg also starred in Boardwalk Empire. Jake expressed to the press, ‘The point is character actors are being targeted’
He denied that and explained he simply wanted to propose. But Jake warned, ‘Look, if you bring up the cookie one more time, I will kill you.’
Andrew then explained, ‘You are covered in crumbs. That’s what’s going to give you away.’
The two were interrupted when Heidi discovered that a cookie had been eaten, and asked her husband if he was the culprit. But Andrew took the blame and said he ate it.
However, the daughter revealed that there is peanut butter in the cookies – which her boyfriend is allergic to. Panic ensued, and Chloe eventually put an EpiPen into Andrew’s neck.
He yelled out in pain and yanked it out of his neck and explained that he was just trying to propose. He opened the box and asked her to marry him.

Gyllenhaal starred in another skit as an officer for the NYPD and was at a press conference to discuss Boardwalk Empire Steve Buscemi – who was recently punched in the face in NYC during a random attack.
He explained that the city was ‘seeing an increase in random acts of violence across the streets.’
One journalist then asked, ‘And how would you define character actors?’ Gyllenhaal stated, ‘Simply put, it’s actors whose faces you can remember but names you cannot’
A list then appeared on a screen next to Jake and he added, ‘So when you’re walking in New York, you may be at risk if: You’ve ever been on the TV show Boardwalk Empire’
‘So just this week national treasure Steve Buscemi was punched while walking through Kips Bay. These types of attacks cannot and will not be tolerated.’
He added, ‘So to everyone watching I have one important message. Stop punching character actors in the face.’
Jake also said, ‘Unfortunately, this follows similar assaults on Rick Moranis and the shockingly versatile Michael Stuhlbarg.’
Moranis is known for his roles in projects such as Ghostbusters while Stuhlbarg also starred in Boardwalk Empire. Jake expressed to the press, ‘The point is character actors are being targeted.’

‘You have a face that makes casting directors go “Oh, interesting.” Your IMDB page has over 100 entries but all your characters just have a first name.’
He continued, ‘You’ve ever done a three-episode arc on a TV show whose title is just letters.’ Show titles such as NCIS then popped up on the screen.
Gyllenhaal later took another question from the crowd, and Jon Hamm stood up, causing the live audience to erupt into cheers at the surprise cameo
‘Yeah. Hi. Would an actor like, say, Jon Hamm have to be worried?’ he asked, with Jake replying with, ‘No, I think you’re fine’
Also during the night, Sabrina Carpenter took to the stage to sing two songs, with the first being her latest single, Espresso – which dropped last month in April
To prevent ‘future attacks’, Jake gave examples such as ‘avoid mass transit if you ever played a girlfriend on Seinfeld’ or ‘a boyfriend on Sex And The City.’

‘Good. I can’t get punched. Without this beautiful face I’m just a tall guy with a perfect body,’ the Mad Men actor said.
Heidi Gardner then asked the last question of the conference, ‘Why does the NYPD care so much about character actors?’
Dramatic music began playing in the background as Jake explained, ‘Because they’re the lifeblood of the entertainment industry.’
‘Without character actors, who would be the one person in the crowd who stands up and shouts “Get him, Spider-Man?” Or who would play the TSA officer in a rom-com who says “Shut up and kiss her already.”‘
‘These people didn’t become actors by being beautiful. They became actors by being good at acting. So please, next time you see a character actor on the street don’t punch him. Google him.’
He concluded the speech with, ‘To figure out the thing that he was in. And thank them.’
Also during the night, Sabrina Carpenter took to the stage to sing two songs, with the first being her latest single, Espresso – which dropped last month in April.
During the performance, she was on a set that looked like a bar and she belted out lyrics while donning a semi-sheer, red babydoll dress and stylish heels
Later in the night, the beauty – who is currently dating Barry Keoghan – sang Feather from her 2022 album titled, ‘Emails I Can’t Send Fwd’
She wowed in a dazzling, light pink corset that had a feathery trim – most likely in reference to the name of the tune
