One Piece: Charlotte Oven’s Netsu Netsu no Mi Devil Fruit, Explained
In the One Piece series, it’s no surprise that Big Mom has many children and, consequently, a large family; however, what made the Big Mom Pirates one of the most feared pirate groups in the world was Big Mom herself and her many powerful children. From Katakuri to Daifuku, Smoothie, and even Oven, many of Big Mom’s children are capable of being pirate captains on their own.
During One Piece’s Whole Cake Island arc, Charlotte Oven, a son of Big Mom and an officer of the Big Mom Pirates, showed just how strong he is thanks to his Netsu Netsu no Mi. With his devil fruit, Oven almost took Luffy’s head and captured the Straw Hat pirates that set out to rescue Sanji.
Overview Of Netsu Netsu No Mi
The Netsu Netsu No Mi Turns Its User Into A High-Heat Human
Charlotte Oven’s paramecia devil fruit, the Netsu Netsu no Mi, allows him to heat his body temperature to ridiculous degrees. Through various mechanisms of heat transfer, Oven can inflict damage on his enemies. While similar to Ace and Akainu’s devil fruit, the Mera Mera no Mi, and the Magu Magu no Mi, Oven’s devil fruit is completely different but with similar effects in some cases. By heating up parts of his body, Oven can deliver devastatingly hot blows that scorch his enemies, packing more damage than an ordinary punch would.
Moreover, apart from simply heating up his body to produce stronger blows, Oven can also directly transfer the heat of his body to others, scorching and setting them ablaze in some cases. Physical contact is one of the primary ways Oven heats up his adversaries or his surroundings; however, he can also do so by glaring into his opponent’s eyes and setting them on fire. For opponents who use weapons, Oven often heats up his opponent’s weapons, making them too hot for them to hold and wield. Additionally, Oven also transfers the heat he emanates to his own weapons, making them deadlier.
Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Netsu Netsu No Mi
The Netsu Netsu No Mi Struggles Against Devil Fruits With Heat Resistance
The strength of the Netsu Netsu no Mi undoubtedly lies in its versatility, as it’s one of the few devil fruits that allows its user to come into direct contact with seawater and not get weakened. If Oven is completely submerged in seawater, like all devil fruit users, he will drown and find himself unable to use his abilities. However, if he simply heats up his hands and puts them into water, the surrounding water begins to boil until it gets hot enough to damage surrounding ships and aquatic life. Moreover, rather than simply boiling up a large mass of seawater, Oven can concentrate his abilities and only heat up several underwater currents, similar to torpedo heat beams that’ll travel towards his opponents.
Despite the strengths of his devil fruit, as a devil fruit based on heat, the effectiveness of the Netsu Netsu no Mi will be drastically reduced against opponents who have a resistance to heat, such as Ace, Akainu, and Sabo. To them, while Oven’s punches might be stronger with the added heat, they’ll experience reduced discomfort brought about by the added heat.
Comparison With Other Heat-Based Devil Fruits
Examining Heat-Based Abilities In One Piece
In the One Piece series, Oven’s devil fruit is not the only one based on heat and its effects. Devil fruits like Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi, and Akainu’s Magu Magu no Mi produce similar effects but with different potencies and usage methods. Interestingly, some non-canon devil fruits present in filler arcs and some One Piece movies also demonstrate a similarity.
Don Accino’s Atsu Atsu no Mi is the most similar to Oven’s devil fruit, and it allows him (Don Accino) to emanate a large amount of heat and control the degree of heat being emanated. Like the Netsu Netsu no Mi, Don Accino’s devil fruit allows him to coat himself in heat, drastically increasing the lethality of his physical attacks. Also, there is the Kachi Kachi no Mi, which uses heat to harden up, used by the Bear King. However, it is non-canon, but still worthy of mention.
Moreover, the Atsu Atsu no Mi allows its user to be completely immersed in molten lava without its user suffering any form of damage, as the scorching layer of heat around the user’s body will protect them. While it is unknown if Oven can replicate such a feat, the Mera Mera no Mi is not able to do so.
Potential Awakenings Of The Netsu Netsu No Mi
Awakening Oven’s Devil Fruit Will Lead To A New Realm Of Heat
As a paramecia devil fruit, when awakened, the Netsu Netsu no Mi is speculated to boil up the ground and surrounding area of its user. The scorching heat emanating from Oven’s body will likely spread to his immediate surroundings, making his enemies unable to even use their immediate environment as a foothold unless they possess a decent immunity to heat. Additionally, with the awakening of his devil fruit, Oven may be able to manipulate external heat and not just the heat being emanated from his body. This will allow him to use the heat of lava and other scorching elements to his advantage, granting him more attack power.
Charlotte Oven’s Role In The One Piece Series With The Netsu Netsu No Mi
Oven’s Possible Return In The Big Mom Pirates’ Revival
With his unique and powerful ability, it’ll be saddening for Oven’s role in One Piece to have come to an end. Oven’s role in the series will likely be tied to the future of the Big Mom Pirates, if at all they have a future. With his abilities, Oven can take on various Yonko commanders and give them a fight. If the Big Mom Pirates ever resurface, Oven will likely play a role with his Netsu Netsu no Mi, which boasts incredible attack power. For fans who don’t see the Big Mom Pirates having any other role in the series, Charlotte Oven may just appear with the rest of his crew members to participate in the upcoming mega war Whitebeard talked about before his death.
