Mortal Kombat es una serie estadounidense de películas de acción de artes marciales basada en la serie de videojuegos de lucha del mismo nombre de Midway Games. La primera película fue producida por Threshold Entertainment de Lawrence Kasanoff. La primera película, Mortal Kombat, se estrenó en 1995 y su secuela, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, se estrenó en 1997. Después de las dos películas, el editor de juegos Midway se declaró en quiebra. Warner Bros., que se convirtió en la empresa matriz de New Line Cinema en 2008 (después de más de una década de operar ambas como divisiones separadas de Time Warner), hizo una oferta para comprar la mayoría de los activos de Midway, incluido Mortal Kombat. En junio de 2009, Kasanoff y Threshold demandaron ante un tribunal de quiebras, argumentando que poseían los derechos de autor de muchos de los personajes de la serie.
El 1 de julio de 2009, el tribunal de quiebras aprobó la venta de la mayoría de los activos de Midway a Warner Bros. sujeto a los reclamos de propiedad intelectual de Threshold Entertainment. Después de años de desarrollo infernal, en abril de 2021 se lanzó un reinicio de la serie.
