Shrek 5 drops first teaser trailer and everyone has the same complaint

A still from the Shrek 5 trailer

We’ve still got over a year until we get to revisit Far Far Away, but the Shrek 5 teaser is already here. However, fans aren’t exactly loving it.

Honestly, Shrek 5 even being a thing is still a bit of a surprise to everyone. The franchise hasn’t been seen since 2010, with Puss in Boots taking over as a main character. Its cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz aren’t exactly regulars in the industry anymore either.

But lo and behold, a fifth instalment is coming 16 years later, currently slated for screens on December 23, 2026. Lord Farquaad still has some time to grow between now and then, but we finally know a little more about the new movie‘s premise.

With a year and a half still to go, Shrek 5 has dropped a teaser trailer in the form of a cast announcement, and not everybody loves it.

Shrek 5 teaser reveals new animation, and everybody hates it

You can make your judgements for yourself from the Shrek 5 teaser below, but fans are saying the same thing – why does the animation look so weird?

Shrek 5': Release Window, Returning Cast, and Everything We Know So Far

Granted, a lot has changed technologically since the swamp was last seen in 2010. However, this arguably means we’ve slightly lost the ogre we once knew and loved. These days, it seems he’s looking more defined and shinier than ever before.

As one fan puts it, “THE ANIMATION LOOKS SO OFF,” with a second agreeing “I don’t know if this animation style is considered ‘better’ but it looks so off when compared to every other Shrek.”

“Something about the animation just doesn’t scream Shrek, looks too ‘generic 2025 animation’ IMO,” a third weighs in.

However, we can’t judge a book by its 30-second clip. We know more recent films such as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, were well-received for their visual style, and there’s still a long way to go before any of us see the final finished product.

“They still look good, let’s be positive,” one fan reasons, while another says: “Do I need my eyes testing? Because they look the same.”

We still don’t know any official plot details yet, but Zendaya will be joining the Shrek 5 cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.

Check out updates for other big sequels including Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5. You can also keep tabs on the year’s releases with our 2025 movie calendar.
