According to a preliminary autopsy, “neither person suffered any blunt force trauma.” The sheriff’s office said official autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said on February 27 that preliminary findings from a preliminary autopsy performed on Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, showed “no blunt force trauma to either person.”
A famous actor couple was found dead at their home in New Mexico on February 26, along with their dog. Actor Gene Hackman was 95 years old.
The cause of death for the couple has not yet been determined, according to a Feb. 27 press release from the local sheriff’s office. “This remains an open investigation,” the release added.
The sheriff’s office said official autopsy and toxicology reports are being processed. Both Hackman and Arakawa have been ordered to undergo carbon monoxide and toxicology tests, according to the release.
Officials in New Mexico said they are not ruling out foul play in the unfortunate incident.
According to an affidavit for a search warrant obtained by CNN affiliate KOAT, a sheriff’s deputy assessed: “The circumstances surrounding the deaths of the couple are sufficiently suspicious in nature to warrant a thorough search and investigation.”
Meanwhile, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told reporters on February 27 that “there was no obvious sign or evidence of foul play,” adding that there was no sign of a struggle or items being taken from the home, and that the couple had been dead for some time.
In its initial public statement about the deaths, the Sheriff’s Office also stated: “At this time, foul play is not suspected in the deaths.”
“The autopsy will be key, and toxicology testing,” Mendoza said at a press conference on Feb. 27. “The investigation is ongoing and will be handled with caution and discretion,” he added.
According to the affidavit, pills were found scattered near Arakawa’s body. Hackman’s wife was found lying on the ground inside the bathroom with an open prescription bottle on a nearby counter. A heater was also found near her head and a dead dog was found in the bathroom closet.
Hackman’s body was found on the ground in another room next to the kitchen. The affidavit said the deputy sheriff “suspected the man (had) suddenly fallen.” Both Hackman and Arakawa appeared to have died several days earlier, according to the deputy sheriff.
Remarkably, two dogs were found alive and well elsewhere in the villa. The front door was open and unlocked, with no signs of forced entry or theft.
Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies were first discovered by someone who identified themselves as a caretaker, according to a 911 call CNN obtained on February 27. In an affidavit, the deputy sheriff said maintenance workers at the home discovered the couple dead.
According to law enforcement, the call was made just before 2 p.m. local time on February 26.
The caller was emotional as they described the scene to the 911 operator, noting that they could not enter the home but could see two people unconscious through the window.
The affidavit also revealed that the investigation found no immediate signs of a carbon monoxide or natural gas leak.
The search warrant application requested permission to search for any flammable materials, controlled substances, weapons, DNA and other potential evidence. It is unclear whether a more thorough search was conducted or if additional evidence was collected.
“It typically takes about four to six weeks to prepare a final cause of death report,” said Chris Ramirez, a spokesman for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner.
“We want to make sure that the investigation is completed properly. And we want to release the appropriate information,” Chief Mendoza said on February 27.
Relatives of the veteran actor, including his daughters and granddaughters, said the family was “deeply saddened by this loss.”
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy,” the family said in a statement. “He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his incredible acting career, but to us he was just a father and grandfather. We will miss him dearly.”
The Oscar-winning actor’s death comes just days before the Academy Awards this weekend.
A source familiar with behind-the-scenes planning at the Oscars told CNN that Gene Hackman is expected to be honored at the ceremony, which will be held on March 2.
During his five-decade career, Hackman won two Oscars and was nominated for five./.
