Shaw’s Supermarket stores in Gloucester and Concord, N.H., are closing, as the chain seeks to cut some of its underperforming locations.
The company will seek to relocate employees at the locations on 7 Railroad Ave. in Gloucester and 20 Fort Eddy Road in Concord to nearby locations, a spokesperson said by email.
Shaw’s, which is owned by national retail giant Albertsons Companies, has supermarkets remaining open on Eastern Ave. in Gloucester plus stores in Beverly and Peabody. Another Concord location, on D’Amante Drive, will also remain open, the company said.
“Like all retailers, we’re constantly evaluating the performance of our stores,” spokeswoman Teresa Edington said by email. “Closing a location is always a tough decision, but we’re focused on continuing to provide the products and services our customers value most.”
Shaw’s parent company, Albertsons, had planned to merge with rival Kroger in a $25 billion deal that was blocked in December on antitrust grounds. Albertsons is suing Kroger, saying its would-be partner didn’t work hard enough to win approval of the deal from regulators.

In January, Albertsons chief financial officer Sharon McCollam warned that the company would close some weaker locations in the wake of the demise of the merger, which had been pending since 2022.
“We have been unable, in some ways, to really do that during the merger period,” McCollam said on a call with analysts. “There could be more closures over the next couple of years than you’ve seen previously.”
