Ukraine’s new generation of drones and how they change the war with Russia | DW News

In a dramatic escalation of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Ukraine has unveiled a new generation of drones that could redefine the battlefield. Germany has reportedly begun financing the production of long-range drones, with initial plans for over 500 units, boasting a striking range of up to 200 kilometers. This comes on the heels of a daring Ukrainian drone strike on a factory deep within Russia, marking one of the most significant incursions since the war began, resulting in three fatalities and numerous injuries.

The newly developed drone, named Nemesis, represents a significant leap in military technology for Ukraine. Capable of operating under the cover of darkness, it employs advanced infrared technology to locate and strike targets behind enemy lines. Unlike traditional drones, Nemesis utilizes a Starlink internet connection, providing a crucial advantage: Russian forces cannot jam this connectivity, allowing operators to control missions from anywhere, including major cities like Kyiv or Lviv.

As Ukrainian forces prepare for night operations, the tactical implications are profound. Ground crews set up near the front lines, arming drones after each mission, while pilots remain safely distanced, often in makeshift “war rooms” resembling dormitories. This innovative approach not only enhances safety but also turns everyday individuals—gamers, engineers, and IT specialists—into vital components of the military machine.

With drones now capable of delivering devastating payloads that include anti-tank mines and incendiary devices, the landscape of warfare is shifting. As Ukraine continues to leverage cutting-edge technology against Russian forces, the implications for the ongoing conflict are monumental. The world watches as Ukraine’s drone capabilities evolve, potentially altering the course of the war in real time.
