From Ukraine to a New Beginning

At just 23 years old, Iryna Zarutska had fled the horrors of war in Ukraine, determined to rebuild her life in the United States. She settled in North Carolina, where she quickly became part of her new community. Friends and coworkers described her as gentle, hardworking, and full of hope.

  • Iryna found work at a local pizzeria in Charlotte, where her warm smile and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who crossed her path. To her, America symbolized opportunity, healing, and the chance to start over.

A Day That Changed Everything

That dream was shattered on what should have been an ordinary day. While riding the Lynx Blue Line train in Charlotte, Iryna was suddenly attacked in an act of senseless violence that shocked passengers and sent shockwaves through the city. Eyewitnesses recalled the chaos and fear as the tragedy unfolded before their eyes.

A Community United in Grief

In the days following her death, the Charlotte community came together to honor Iryna’s memory. Vigils were held, candles lit, and flowers placed in her honor. At the pizzeria where she worked, coworkers displayed her photo surrounded by roses, with heartfelt messages written by those who knew and loved her. Even customers who had only met her once stopped by to share their condolences.

A Story That Resonated Beyond Charlotte

News of Iryna’s tragic passing spread far beyond North Carolina, resonating with people across the nation and around the world. For many, her story is a heartbreaking reminder of the struggles refugees face — escaping war only to encounter new dangers in the places they hoped would be safe.

Her death has also sparked wider conversations about public safety, justice, and how to better protect vulnerable members of society.

Gone Too Soon, Forever Remembered

Though her life ended far too soon, Iryna leaves behind a powerful legacy of compassion and courage. Her memory lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, coworkers, and countless strangers who feel touched by her story.

Her journey reminds us how fragile life can be — and how important it is to cherish the people we love every single day.
