Kevin Costner’s Favorite Dessert: A Classic American Treat You Can Buy in Stores

Thumbnail

You probably know Kevin Costner as John Dutton, the rugged antihero from your dad’s favorite show, Yellowstone. Maybe you remember him as the all-American star of classics like Bull Durham and Field of Dreams. Or perhaps you know him as the Oscar-winning director of Dances with Wolves—a film that famously beat out Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas for Best Director. Kevin Costner has been a staple of American entertainment for decades, and we’re glad he is. But what about his tastes when it comes to food?

It might not surprise you that Costner, with his classic Americana vibe, loves apple pie. What might surprise you is that he prefers it store-bought.

Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau, the on-set chef for Yellowstone, reveals that Costner is a pretty simple eater who likes his meals straightforward and no-fuss: “Before I met him, I think he mostly lived on canned chili and hot dogs.” Despite watching his sugar intake, Costner often asked Guilbeau to make apple pie. And when Kevin Costner asks for apple pie, you don’t say no—the guy was in JFK, after all.

So what kind of apple pie does Kevin Costner prefer? Store-bought.

Contrary to what you might expect from a Hollywood star, Costner is not about fancy desserts. Speaking with EatingWell, he admitted he favors brands like Sara Lee and Marie Callender’s over anything gourmet. Anything too fancy just doesn’t suit his taste. He even skips the classic pie à la mode (no ice cream on his pie), though he admits he might enjoy some ice cream alongside his coffee.

While homemade apple pie might not be Kevin Costner’s style, it could definitely be yours. For the best homemade pie, use tart baking apples like Granny Smith or Braeburn. Macerate the apples with sugar and syrup to get the perfect texture, or try dicing them like Gordon Ramsay for a great finish.
