Cameron Diaz Returns After 11 Years and Netflix’s New Action-Comedy Feels Like Deadpool Meets Dating Chaos—Hollywood Might Never Recover

Maybe this is a dramatic statement, but I feel as though the world has become a slightly dimmer place ever since Cameron Diaz stopped starring in movies. I know, I know, that sounds like a major stretch, but hear me out. Back in 2014, the actress decided to deliberately step down from her celebrity status and high-profile film career in order to focus on her personal life. And although I fully admire her decision and stand by her choice to prioritize her personal well-being, I feel as though blockbuster movie magic has somewhat dwindled ever since the star stepped away from the spotlight. (I mean, come on. The HolidayIn Her ShoesThere’s Something About Mary? All iconic. All exposing Diaz’s effortless on-screen charm.)

And now, after 11 years of hiatus, the queen of the screen is back for a Netflix original movie, titled Bad Day. Technically, this will be the movie star’s second Netflix role after her long time off, as the actress starred in Back in Action, a major hit on the streaming platform, which was released just this year. With the success of that film in which she co-starred alongside Jamie Lee Fox, Diaz is continuing to charm with a leading role in Bad Day, which is currently in production.

What is ‘Bad Day’ about?

While the premise for Cameron Diaz’s upcoming Netflix film is very hush-hush at the moment, with most of its storyline under wraps, what we do know is that it’s an action-comedy flick directed by Jake Szymanski. The film will have Diaz portraying a single mother who is just trying to be an attentive and loving parent to her daughter. Unfortunately, a series of unfortunate events leads to a meltdown for Diaz’s character, who just can’t seem to catch a break.

The movie is inspired by the 1993 Michael Douglas film, Falling Down, in which Douglas portrays a father going through a similar meltdown at the expense of his daughter’s special birthday celebration.

Who’s in the ‘Bad Day’ cast?

The Bad Day cast is obviously lead by the one-and-only Cameron Diaz. However, she’s joined by names like:

  • Rhenzy Feliz (The Penguin)
  • Jessica Belkin (ElleThe Hunting Wives)
  • Emma Pearson (Blue Bloods)
  • Ed O’Neill (Modern FamilyFinding Dory)
  • Danielle Brooks (PeacemakerThe Color Purple)
  • John Higgins (Pitch PerfectBad Teacher)

When does ‘Bad Day’ come out?

According to Deadline — and the recent set leaks — production for Bad Day begins this fall. With that in mind, we’ll likely see the movie come out sometime around the second half of 2026.

Does this mean Cameron Diaz isn’t retired from acting?

Netflix

With two Netflix movies in one year, fans of the actress might be wondering whether Cameron Diaz is back in the film game for good. According to the movie star, she’s still trying to figure that out herself.

“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” she revealed to The Hollywood Reporter. “If I say it, then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.”

Where can I watch ‘Bad Day’?

Bad Day will likely be available on Netflix once it premieres!

The Daily Mail shared some behind-the-scenes pictures of Cameron Diaz filming Bad Day, and let’s just say her look is…interesting! I’m not saying her outfit is giving Adam Sandler meets Blake Lively in It Ends With Us, but I’m not NOT saying that either. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what it means!
