Netflix has just dropped its first trailer for its new crime thriller The Rip showcasing its star-studded cast for the Miami-based film, which is due to hit screens next year.

The teaser is sure to make the wait until its January 2026 drop date rough, as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been revealed in character for the first time.

The film follows a team of Miami cops responding to a tip off that points them to a stash house that their informant claims contains $300,000 inside.

Arriving at the scene, the officers are shocked to discover the ruined home is instead packed with $20million in cash which is down to Matt, 54, and Ben, 53, to seize.

News of the haul spreads and questions begin to swirl, not only about who the money belongs to, but what should be done with it, and who among the team can be trusted.

And as tensions between the team rises and paranoia builds, alliances will start to fray as the officers wonder if someone could be hiding something.

Matt stars as the cop caught in the middle of the unfolding chaos, while co-star Ben plays a senior officer whose motives will become increasingly murky.

The duo will be joined on screen by the likes of Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Callle, Cataline Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins and Kyle Chandler.

It’s the latest work from writer-director Joe Carnahan, who is best known for his work on crime thriller films Narc, The Grey and Smokin’ Aces, with Hollywood stars Matt and Ben’s company Artists Equity behind the production.

Artists Equity released its first film Air in April 2023 about the origin of Air Jordan and it starred both of them with Affleck also directing.

The production company released the 2024 documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told for Amazon MGM Studios about Affleck’s wife Jennifer Lopez, 54.

Despite the long wait til drop day, fans are already fired up to see the finished result, taking to social media to gush over the ‘epic’ first look at the characters in the trailer.

‘I see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in a movie together, I am watching it day one,’ one reacted, while another added: ‘Every actor looks perfect for their role, a must see.’

A third agreed: ‘Epic cast, and I’m so glad to see Matt and Ben together’.

Teasing more of what’s to come, when the The Rip was debuted at a Netflix event back in January, Ben teased that the series would feel like if ‘Heat met Narc met Training Day’.

Speaking to GQ, director Joe added of the ‘tense and taut’ series: ‘You’re playing with genre tropes and two guys that have been on the screen for 30 plus years.

‘People are going to come in there with their own ideas, and preconceptions about them as actors and as celebrities.

“I think it poses an interesting question because people are going to plug in, “Well, I trust Matt Damon more”, or, “I trust Ben Affleck more”.’

The Rip is released on Netflix on 16 January 2026.
