Benson Boone has opened up about going through a tough time following his rumored split from girlfriend Maggie Thurmon. The 23-year-old “Beautiful Things” singer got emotional during his September 9 concert at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, speaking candidly about the pain of losing someone close.
While he didn’t mention Thurmon by name, his words made it clear that his personal life had changed. “Sometimes people leave your life, whether it’s the right thing or the wrong thing, and it’s always horrible,” Boone told the crowd, according to People.
“It sucks to sit in it, to be sad about it, and to feel it so hard sometimes, but it’s OK,” he added. Fans speculated the breakup occurred just two days after Thurmon was last seen supporting him at his Raleigh concert.
Boone and Thurmon had been dating for over a year and were often seen together at public events, including the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards and the Twisters premiere in July. TMZ reports that the couple went public in March 2024 at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation viewing party and often shared glimpses of their life together on social media.
Though neither has officially confirmed the split, Boone’s remarks on stage—and his follow-up comments to fans outside the venue—reflect a difficult period. “Thank you for coming out, today was a lovely show,” he said in a TikTok video. “It was a rough day, so I was very happy to be on stage and see you guys.”
In an earlier interview, Boone explained what drew him to Thurmon: “It’s her whole personality, who she is. She’s the sweetest and the kindest.”
Currently on his American Heart World Tour, Boone performed tracks from his latest album, including his 2022 song In the Stars. Introducing the song, he said: “Singing this song tonight is going to help me a lot,” highlighting its personal significance.
He shared the emotional weight of his experience with the audience: “Sometimes people leave your life. Whether it’s the right thing or the wrong thing. And it is always hard—every single time. As terrible as it is, there’s always something or someone who can pull you out of it.”
In a fan video shared to TikTok, Boone appeared visibly emotional as he prepared to perform In the Stars. He told the crowd, “I hope you enjoy this song tonight because it means something very special, and I hope you take home something from this night. And if it is this song, or any song, let it be the next three and a half minutes because this means everything to me.”
