BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s Chinese Social Media Account Shut Down Amid Controversy Over 18+ Performance in Paris

It was reported by CNN and other sources on the 1st of October (local time) that Lisa, a member of the girl group BLACKPINK, had her Weibo account closed after her appearance in a well-known “18+” adult show in Paris, France.

According to the reports, Lisa’s Weibo account was closed with a notice stating, “This account is no longer accessible due to reports of violations of laws, regulations, and Weibo management rules.”

The nature of the specific complaints received remains unclear, but it is pointed out that Chinese internet companies regularly suspend or delete accounts for violating their numerous censorship regulations or causing significant controversies.

CNN further noted that the suspension of Lisa’s Weibo account occurred in the midst of a strict control situation in China’s internet space, following the significant controversy that arose after Lisa’s appearance in the “Crazy Horse” performance in Paris in September.

Crazy Horse is one of the three major shows representing Paris, along with Moulin Rouge and Lido.

It is a show that began when avant-garde artist Alain Bernardin opened a cabaret called “Crazy Horse” in Paris in 1951, featuring dancers who perform with high heels, lighting, and visuals. It is known as the most revealing of the three major shows in Paris, and there was even a performance in Seoul in 2015.

CNN mentioned that Lisa’s performance had sparked controversy in some conservative Asian regions, saying, “Lisa, the only non-Korean member among BLACKPINK, is especially popular in China.”

Furthermore, CNN added that Weibo saw intense debates surrounding Lisa’s performance.

Comments like “Lisa is exceptionally talented. Why did she perform at Crazy Horse?” “Her account should have been closed earlier,” “Even after Lisa’s Crazy Horse performance, she continues to receive significant attention on Weibo,” “However, the closure of her account does not necessarily imply that her Weibo presence should be banned” were mentioned.

Weibo accounts of the other BLACKPINK members, Jisoo, Jennie, and RosΓ©, remain active.
