Leading a live orchestra of dozens, Lizzo kicked off the 2020 Grammys with a majestic medley performance of latest album title track “Cuz I Love You” and 2019 Hot 100 chart-topper “Truth Hurts.”
“Tonight is for Kobe!” she shouted before launching into a guttural performance of “Love You.” After one verse and chorus, the performance paused for a brief instrumental break featuring a number of male ballerinas, before Lizzo returned to rap her way through “Truth Hurts,” flanked with a number of bodysuit-clad backing dancers. And of course, she was handed a flute before the final chorus to briefly flex on the woodwind instrument, yelling “PERIOD!” at the end.
Lizzo is nominated for the most awards of any artist at the 2020 Grammys, with eight nods, including album of the year (for Cuz I Love You), song of the year (“Truth Hurts”), record of the year (also “Truth Hurts”) and best new artist. She already won two in the pre-awards portion of the telecast, taking best urban contemporary album for the deluxe version of her Cuz I Love You best traditional R&B performance for the power ballad “Jerome.”
