Despite referring to the genre as “bad, terrible, not funny,” romcom queen Sandra Bullock happily agreed to star in a $317M film because it featured Ryan Reynolds.

Sandra Bullock is one of the talented actresses who are known for her successful Hollywood career. Working with several A-listers, she has explored various genres in the film industry and ultimately became a rom-com Queen due to her blockbuster films.

While she has become Hollywood’s sweetheart with her strong screen presence, she opened up about not delving into rom-com anymore. However, her preference didn’t stop her to work in a successful film that starred Ryan Reynolds.

Sandra Bullock Hate Romantic Comedies!

The 58-year-old actress, Sandra Bullock is prominently known for her works in While You Were Sleeping, Two Weeks Notice, and The Proposal among several others. While fans love to see her in the light genre, she has different thoughts on the same.

In a 2009 interview with The Age, she opened up about not working on rom-com projects for years due to some specific reason. She explained,

“I stopped doing them – how many years ago? They are terrible, they are bad, and they are not funny.”

Commenting on her then-new film, The Proposal, she shared the general idea of how female characters are not well-written in rom-com however “I love my comedy too much to bastardize it with… romantic comedy.”

While she has made up her mind about not picking the rom-com projects anymore, The Proposal was quite different.

Why Did Sandra Bullock Accepted to Work on The Proposal?

The 2009 film was a critical success starring Bullock and Reynolds as the leading cast with Malin Åkerman, Craig T. Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, and Betty White in supporting roles.

While the former had “no desire” to take any rom-com roles anymore, the film script changed her mind. In an interview with Glamour, she shared,

“And I read it. And I was really upset (laughs). Because it was so well written… “

Though the script caught her attention, she was still wondering how the film would exceed her standards. It was when the Deadpool star came into the action!

“The problem, though, was who can direct a comedy like that? Who can raise the bar? Who are you going to cast? And they said, ‘What if we cast Ryan Reynolds?’ I’ve known Ryan for a while, so as soon as they said that, it made it a lot more difficult to say no to.”

With Anne Fletcher directing the project, the duo did extremely well with their intense chemistry that eventually raised the bar. Due to her portrayal, Bullock got a Golden Globe Award nomination with the film grossing $317 million worldwide.
