At the ‘2023 Billboard Music Awards’ (2023 BBMA), the strength of K-pop girl groups shone through.
BLACKPINK and NewJeans were honored with awards, and FIFTY FIFTY, celebrating their first anniversary, failed to win an award but proved their potential by being nominated.
The ‘2023 Billboard Music Awards’ were held at 10 a.m. (Korean time) on the 20th in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, USA.
BLACKPINK won in the newly established category of ‘Top K-Pop Touring Artist‘ at this year’s ceremony.
The category also saw nominations for BTS’s Suga and TWICE. BLACKPINK attracted 1.8 million attendees during their second world tour ‘Born Pink’ from October last year to September this year, the largest scale for a K-pop girl group.
NewJeans won the ‘Top Global K-Pop Artist’ category. In addition to this category, NewJeans was also nominated for a total of four awards, including ‘Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Artist,’ ‘Top Global K-pop Song,’ and ‘Top K-pop Album’ (including multiple nominations in the Top Global K-pop Song category).
After winning the ‘Top Global K-Pop Artist’ category, Minji said, “Thank you for this award. It’s an honor just to be nominated alongside such great artists. We will once again repay all the love and support we have received from fans.” Danielle expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you to our company and family, and to producer Min Hee-jin, who has supported us,” and Hyein added, “I am thankful to the members. We encourage and trust each other.”
NewJeans continued, “We hope that one day we can bring as much happiness to you as you have given us. We will strive to be artists that create music everyone can enjoy. Thank you once again.”
FIFTY FIFTY, who celebrated their first anniversary and the honor of attending the ‘2023 BBMA,’ unfortunately did not win an award. They were nominated in the ‘Top Duo/Group’ category but did not receive the call and the award went to the Foo Fighters instead.
FIFTY FIFTY’s debut single ‘The Beginning: Cupid’ and its track ‘Cupid,’ released on February 24th, entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 100. It climbed to a peak of number 17 and set a record of charting for 25 consecutive weeks. FIFTY FIFTY member Keena, attending the ‘2023 BBMA,’ expressed her disbelief and gratitude for the nomination.
NewJeans and Stray Kids are set to perform as celebratory acts at this year’s ceremony. NewJeans presented stages for ‘Super Shy’ and ‘OMG,’ while Stray Kids are scheduled to perform the title track ‘Thunderous’ from their third album and their new song ‘ROCK (樂).’
